January 2002 - Fishing Reports

1/31/02
There were a few trout caught in East Matagorda Bay along the south shoreline -- but the weather turned nasty and kept people from going out.
1/30/02
In East Matagorda Bay a fair amount of trout were caught by drifting over scattered shell on the west end using soft plastics. Wind was exceptionally high, the bay was "tore up" and kept people from going out in the bays.
1/29/02
In West Matagorda Bay there were trout and redfish caught on the south shoreline by wadefishermen using soft plastics. Flounder and a few trout were caught in the Diversion Channel using artificial bait. A few trout are still being caught in East Matagorda Bay . Surf fishermen caught a fair amount of whiting on the beach.
1/28/02
In East Matagorda Bay fishermen were limiting out on trout -- drifting over scattered shell on the west end of the bay using soft plastics. It was real foggy on the bay all day, so there weren't a lot of fishermen out.
1/27/02
In East Matagorda Bay some trout were caught along the south shoreline by wadefishing, using soft plastics for bait. In the Diversion Channel, redfish were caught on crabs and shrimp. At the fishing pier on the beach a few black drum were caught. Offshore fishermen reported nice catches of red snapper, ling and redfish -- these were being caught at the first rigs offshore.
1/26/02
Fishing was a little better today. In East Matagorda Bay there were some trout caught by drifting over scattered shell on the west end of the bay using Corkies. We had a report of redfish being caught on cut-up crab in the Diversion Channel. At the pier on the beach fishermen were catching black drum on dead shrimp.
1/25/02
It was a slow day today. Very few people went out. There were a few reports of trout being caught along the north shoreline in East Matagorda Bay. We also heard of a few whiting caught down at the pier on the beach. We should be coming up on a good weekend, though, with good fishing around midday.
1/24/02
Fishing today was nonexistent. With the rain and the norther blowing, no one went out. When the weather is decent, so is the fishing -- or so it seems.
1/23/02
There were limits of trout caught by drifting the shell and using plastic in East Matagorda Bay. In West Matagorda Bay, lots of reds were caught on the south shoreline using live shrimp.
1/22/02
There were a few reports of trout being caught in East Matagorda Bay today -- nothing to brag about, though.
1/21/02
No fishing report again because of the weather.
1/20/02
In East Matagorda Bay some trout and reds were caught along the south shoreline wadefishing using soft plastics for bait. At the fishing pier on the beach, plenty of bull reds are being caught on live finger mullet and live shrimp. At the bridge in Matagorda, nice-sized redfish were being caught using the same thing for bait. There were also a few flounder and trout caught in the river near River Bend Tavern.
1/19/02
This morning started out really cloudy and a little foggy, but the wind picked up early and blew hard for most of the day. The day was sunny and pretty, even though the wind kept the fishermen at home. Late this evening the wind died down and quit blowing. No fishing reports were available for the day.
1/18/02
The bays stayed fogged in today, so no one went out fishing. However, there were a few sheephead caught off the pier at the jetties.
1/17/02
Wadefishing in East Matagorda Bay along the south shoreline was productive for trout and reds today on soft plastic artificial baits. At the jetties, sand trout, whiting, sheephead, and some bullreds were being caught on dead shrimp and cut mullet.
1/16/02
Both bays - East and West - were producing nice redfish today. Fishermen were using cut mullet, finger mullet, and dead shrimp as bait. No one reported catching any trout in either bay.
1/15/02
The only place that was doing any good was West Matagorda Bay. People limited out on reds using mostly plastic Norton sandeel. Others were caught on live mullet and live shrimp. The weather was fair.
1/14/02
Guide Mike Mosely and crew went out in East Matagorda Bay and didn't have any luck. Other than that, there were no reports from East Bay. Tommy Kountz went out into West Matagorda Bay and limited out on reds using top water lures. The wind began blowing from the northeast at about 8 a.m. and continued for the rest of the day.
1/13/02
A fair amount of reds were caught today in East Matagorda Bay. They were caught on mainly dead shrimp and live mullet. Offshore fishing was great. They were catching drum. There were no reports from West Bay today. The wind was blowing from the north this morning, but later in the day it switched and began coming in from the southeast.
1/12/02
The fishing today was similar to yesterday but a little bit better. A fair amount of reds were brought in today, and a few more trout showed up. They were caught on the same bait as yesterday- trout on plastic lures and reds on live mullet. The weather looks like its going to be fair fishing tomorrow, also.
1/11/02
Some red were caught today and a few trout. The trout were caught off artificials and reds were caught of live mullet.
1/10/02
Some nice stringers of trout were caught in East Matagorda Bay by drifting out in the middle of the bay. Whiting were caught at the beach off the pier.
1/9/02
At last! A real fishing report! A few people went out today and came in with limits of trout and reds - caught in West Matagorda Bay. Near the mouth of the Colorado River, there were trout and whiting being caught. At the pier on Matagorda Beach there were a few redfish caught.
1/8/02

Fishing is still bad. Yesterday was a good day to fish -- the weather warmed up and the wind wasn't bad, but no one went fishing...so, no report.

1/7/02
Evidently the weather is still too cold for the fishermen to venture out -- only two boats went out today, and neither one was seen coming in with fish.
1/6/02
Things may be starting to improve -- Old Gulf Cut and Boggy Cut in East Matagorda Bay was producing redfish today -- live finger mullet was being used for bait.
1/5/02
Wet and windy - and no fishermen went out today!
1/4/02
Fishing seems to be picking up a little. Today started off really cold warmed up quickly. There weren't a lot of fishermen out fishing, but we had reports of redfish being caught in the Diversion Channel and in West Matagorda Bay. There were no reports from East Matagorda Bay. Bull reds are again being caught off the pier at the beach.
1/3/02
Unable to obtain fishing report today because of the weather, but I did hear of a few trout being caught in the Diversion Channel.
1/2/02
It looks like the cold weather is still keeping the fishermen at home- I only saw two boats go out today, and they were oystermen. So, it looks like no fishing report until the weather warms a little.
1/1/02
Fishing reports over the holidays have been few and far between. The holidays have slowed everything down, and the weather has been windy and cold. So there have been few boats going out fishing -- and no reports from those that do. Hopefully, things will get back to normal -- and so will the fishing reports.
