Sunday
3/31/02
The Easter Bunny and/or the wind must have scared away all the fishermen because very few people went out fishing today. There were a few whiting, drum and reds caught at the jetties today, but nothing spectacular.
Saturday
3/30/02
Fishing is still poor in East Matagorda Bay. There were a few trout caught around Chinquapin Reefs, though. Oyster Lake is still holding strong for nice catches of redfish. In West Matagorda Bay wading for trout was good along the south shoreline near Green's Bayou. Not as many reported as yesterday, but there weren't as many fishermen out there today, either. There were some reports of whiting being caught on the south end of the river near Rawlings Bait Camp. It's still good fishing for trout up the river at night under lights.
Friday
3/29/02
Things are still dead in East Matagorda Bay. However, things are poppin' in West Matagorda Bay along the south shoreline for catching trout on soft plastics. Oyster Lake is still going strong for redfish. Nothing's being caught in the surf, and the Colorado River is still producing trout at night under the lights.
Thursday
3/28/02
Things came to a dead standstill in East Matagorda Bay today -- very few fish came out of the bay. However, things heated up in West Matagorda Bay along the south shoreline. Lots of trout were caught on soft plastics. Oyster Lake was great for redfish today - on live shrimp and cut bait. The Colorado River is producing some nice sized trout under lights at night. Diana Osborne, wife of Skipper Osborne, caught a really nice 29-inch trout at her house on River Run under lights the other night.
Wednesday
3/27/02
Fishing was much improved over yesterday. Nice limits of redfish caught by wadefishermen along the south shoreline of East Matagorda Bay - mudhoggin' (wading in about 4 ft.water with muddy bottom) was the best place to be. There were small trout being caught around the Tripod in West Matagorda Bay on the south side of the bay. For those of you coming to Matagorda to go fishing, Hwy 35 is closed to thru traffic between Bay City and Wadsworth because of a well blow-out. You can detour this way: when leaving Bay City on Hwy 60, turn right on Hwy 2668 which goes by Celanese. Follow 2668 until you hit 521, and turn right. After about two miles you will run back into Hwy 60 south of Wadsworth.
Tuesday
3/26/02
North wind was blowing today - kept fishing...and catchin'...to a minimum. There were a few reds and trout caught out in East Matagorda Bay.
Monday
3/25/02
Only a few trout and reds caught today in East Matagorda Bay -- poor day of fishing.
Sunday
3/24/02
The wind was still howling down here around Matagorda Bay today! There weren't near as many fishermen out in the bays today and only a fair amount of trout being caught. The south shoreline of East Matagorda Bay produced some trout and a few reds, and the Diversion Channel was fair fishing this morning. Minimal tide action today slowed down the fishing, too.
Saturday
3/23/02
In East Matagorda Bay a fair amount of trout were caught today by wadefishermen wading along the south shoreline. At the fishing pier/jetties, some whiting and redfish were being caught. Nice drum are being caught in the lower Colorado River area near the old Parker's Cut. There were also reports of some redfish being caught in West Matagorda Bay.
Thursday
3/21/02
Very few fishermen went out today, so I was unable to obtain a report.
Wednesday
3/20/02
No fishing report today because of the wind.
Tuesday
3/19/02
Today was a bad day for fishing in East and West Bays - the wind was blowing really hard down here. However, we had reports of some flounder and trout being caught up in the Colorado River.
Monday
3/18/02
Not a good day for fishing in either bay - a few scattered reports of fishermen catching trout - but that's about all.
Sunday
3/17/02
Happy St. Patrick's Day to all you Matagorda Bay fishermen! Today was a good day for catching trout drifting out in East Matagorda Bay. Lots of nice stringers of trout came in from East Bay, and a few oversized redfish and big drum were caught at the jetties. The south shoreline in West Matagorda Bay produced a few nice stringers of fish, too.
Saturday
3/16/02
There was a fair amount of trout caught in East Matagorda Bay today -- not as many as yesterday, though. There were a few big redfish (over 28 inches) caught on the jetties at the beach -- and some whiting. The Diversion Channel produced nice catches of sand trout today.
Friday
3/15/02
Fishing was just about the same today as yesterday in East Matagorda Bay - nice catches of trout and a few reds in East Matagorda Bay drifting over scattered shell and wadefishing along the south shoreline. This seems to be a trend that's holding true. The wind may turn and come out of the north tomorrow, making the south shoreline not as good -- the north shoreline will become a better bet in that case. Good luck!
Thursday
3/14/02
Fishing is finally heating up! There were nice catches of trout and a few reds in East Matagorda Bay -- drifting over scattered shell and wadefishing along the south shoreline again! There were a few flounder caught in the Diversion Channel. The surf was slow today, produceing only limited catches of sheephead, whiting and redfish.
Wednesday
3/13/02
It was a good day for fishing today - looks like spring has decided to stay around for awhile. There were quite a few trout caught out in East Matagorda Bay today by drifting over scattered shell and wadefishing along the south shoreline. There were also some redfish caught, but not as many reds as trout. The guides were out in East Matagorda Bay today in full force with their boats full -- all of them brought in nice catches of fish - trout, reds, and some sheephead. Again, it seems like Charlie Paradoski was in the lead with the biggest catch.
Tuesday
3/12/02
A fair amount of fishermen went out today -- there weren't a lot of fish caught. However, "Superguide" Charlie Paradoski's party came in with a nice catch of 18 trout and 1 flounder- caught drifting over scattered shell in East Matagorda Bay. Seems like Charlie's parties always come in with a nice catch.
Monday
3/11/02
Wadefishing along the south shoreline in East Matagorda Bay is still the name of the game. There were a few trout and reds caught today but that's all the action we heard about.
Sunday
3/10/02
Strong chilly winds from the east northeast prevented many fishermen for venturing out into the bays -- it's very hard to find protected areas when the wind blows from the east or north of east direction. We saw a few trout come out of East Matagorda Bay -- but nothing to brag about.
Saturday
3/9/02
On Friday there were some redfish and trout caught in East Matagorda Bay by wadefishermen who fished along the south shoreline -- mudhoggin'. Today started off foggy until the norther blew in, bringing a little rain and lots of wind -- which put a quick end to this fishing day. However, before the wind got too bad today, wadefishermen caught trout and redfish in the same area as yesterday.
Thursday
3/7/02
In East Matagorda Bay there were fair amounts of redfish and speckled trout caught by wadefishermen along the south shoreline. There were also some speckled trout caught by drifting over scattered shell using Norton Sand Eels, BassAssassins, and Mirrolures.
Wednesday
3/6/02
The water in the bays has not warmed up enough yet to improve fishing -- it's about 51 degrees and needs to go to around 60 degrees before the fish will really become active in their feeding. However, there are still good spots to fish -- muddy areas where the trout can wallow down into the mud and stay warm. One such area is wadefishing the south shoreline in East Matagorda Bay -- one fishing guide and his party was able to bring in 19 trout and 9 redfish today. We had a couple of reports of small redfish being caught in West Matagorda Bay today -- but no keepers.
Tuesday
3/5/02
Fishing reports are few and far between right now. The water temperature hasn't warmed up, the weather has been bad, no one has been going out fishing. Hopefully we've seen just about the last of the really bad weather and people will start getting out into the bays and bringing in those full stringers of springtime trout. So, keep checking back -- our fishing reports will be coming hot and heavy real soon!
Friday
3/1/02
More reports of redfish being caught on live bait in West Matagorda Bay, and there were reports of stringers of trout coming from up the Colorado River. Not many people out fishing today, though, because of the weather. It's hard to predict the fishing right now because of these cold fronts and wind we've been having. Protected ares, though, like the Diversion Channel look good and have been producing fish lately. Coon Island (on the other side of Oyster Lake) is another good prospect. Midday looks like a good time to be out fishing because of the full moon we just had.
