April 2002 - Fishing Reports

Tuesday
04/30/02
The wind is back....very little fishing was done today. There were a couple of reports of gafftops being caught in West Matagorda Bay, but that's about all.
Monday
04/29/02
The Greens Bayou area of West Matagorda Bay produced a few trout and redfish today for wadefishermen using Norton Sand Eels.
Sunday
04/28/02
At last the wind quit blowing hard. Lots of fishermen went out today, and looks like lots of redfish and some trout were brought in. Fishing was good along the south shoreline of both bays for wadefishermen, and drifting over scattered shell produced a few trout.
Saturday
04/27/02
The wind woke me before dawn with its howling -- and it never slowed down all day. None of the fishing guides even went out today because of the wind. There was a tournament down here, though, so some fishermen did go out. Wadefishing was just about all that you could do with the wind, and pickings were slim.
Friday
04/26/02
Sorry there was no fishing report yesterday. I was out of town at the King Ranch in South Texas on a birding trip -- really great! Fishing has improved a little. The south shoreline of West Matagorda Bay is still the answer -- fire tiger or rootbeer/chartreuse Bass Assassins will get you some trout. One guide came in with limits of trout for everyone in his party -- great fishing, Captain Paradoski!
Wednesday
04/24/02
West Matagorda Bay is where the action was today. There was a fair amount of trout and redfish caught along the south shoreline by wadefishermen using Bass Assassins and Norton Sand Eels.
Tuesday
04/23/02
Fishing is still very slow in the bays. An ESE wind is still blowing, keeping the water messed up in most areas. A few trout are being caught along the south shorelines of both bays. We did have a report of a guide who was able to catch some trout, redfish and flounder in East Matagorda Bay on bone-colored Excalibur Super Spooks.
Monday
04/22/02
Fishing continues to be bad - seems like the wind and a lack of water movement (tides) are the main factors. There were a couple of reports of some trout being caught in West Matagorda Bay along the south shoreline.
Sunday
04/21/02
Fishing is still really bad - the wind blowing straight down the bays is keeping the water all torn up. Hopefully the wind will slow down a bit this week and the fishing will improve.
Saturday
04/20/02
Sorry for the lateness of this report - we were in Louisiana on Saturday- suckin' them crawfish heads! Looks like we didn't miss much, anyway. Fishing was reportedly bad, with only a few trout, redfish and flounder caught in scattered locations in West Matagorda Bay.
Friday
04/19/02
Fishing in the bays is still bad - the wind is tearing everything up. We are receiving only a few scattered reports of trout being caught in the bays right now. Big reds can be caught at the fishing pier at the beach, though, using squid for bait.
Thursday
04/18/02
Fishing is still bad. Water in the bays is still messed up from the winds. Fishing pier at the beach is still good for catching bull reds. The Colorado River is still off-color.
Wednesday
04/17/02
Although the wind was not as strong as it has been, fishing is remaining slow this week. There are scattered reports of trout and reds being caught in both bays, but nothing in any great numbers. We are still receiving reports of bull reds and whiting at the pier.
Tuesday
04/16/02
It was real windy again today, and not many fishermen went out. Surprisingly, though, there were reports of bull reds and whiting being caught on cut bait at the pier on the beach.
Monday
04/15/02
Windy today - only a couple of parties went out - some trout were brought in, but nothing to get excited about. The Colorado River has gone back down to its regular level, but the water is still off-color. Might be good for catfishing right now, but saltwater fishing should stay bad for about another week.
Sunday
04/14/02
Fishing was pretty good today, but not as good as yesterday. East Matagorda Bay produced nice trout along the south shoreline. Some nice stringers of reds and a few trout were caught along the south shoreline of West Matagorda Bay, too. Some big redfish were brought in off the pier at the beach-- they were caught on cut bait. Today was rougher offshore and in the surf - we received no report of those areas.
Saturday
04/13/02
Fishing was good everywhere except the river. Nice trout were being brought in from East and West Matagorda Bays by wadefishermen along the south shoreline using live shrimp or artificials. The pier at the beach - good fishing with nice catches of drum and big whiting. Beach fishing is still good - big reds in the surf using cut bait. Even offshore was good - catches of red snapper being brought in.
Friday
04/12/02
In West Matagorda Bay scattered trout were caught along the south shoreline on jalapeno Norton Sand Eels- a fair day of fishing over there. In East Matagorda Bay there were some trout being caught along the south shoreline -- catching them on She-Dog topwater lures. In the surf they were catching big reds and some gafftop -- at the pier they were catching big whiting and drum. Cut bait appeared to be what the big reds and gafftop were hungry for.
Thursday
04/11/02
Fair fishing today! Capt. Don Wood brought in some nice-sized trout with a 5 lb. and 6 lb.one in the bunch. He was wadefishing along the south shoreline of East Matagorda Bay using soft plastics. The West Bay was good for trout along the south shoreline for wadefishermen. No report of redfish or flounder being caught today, though.
Wednesday
04/10/02
It wasn't a good day for fishing. The wind was blowing out of the northeast, keeping the water all messed up. There wasn't any bait working to key on, either. There were, however, some trout, a few flounder and a few redfish brought in from West Matagorda Bay by wadefishermen who fished along the south shoreline using soft plastics.
Tuesday
04/09/02
A few trout, redfish and flounder came out of East Matagorda Bay today. This was reported by the game warden who sits near the boat ramp doing a survey sometimes - he said that not many people went out, and not much was brought in. Stay tuned for the Colorado River report tomorrow.

Bad Weather! -- Enough Said.
Sunday
04/07/02
A real slow weekend of fishing - the weather was windy and chilly and kept most people out of the bays. There were a few trout and reds caught here and there but nothing worth noting.
Friday
04/05/02
Fishing is still not real good. There were a few reports of trout being caught by wadefishermen down at Greens Bayou in West Matagorda Bay and drifting in the the Diversion Channel.
Thursday
04/04/02
The only report I had of any fish being caught was Dr. Sher -- he caught 10 trout and 2 flounder in West Matagorda Bay.
Wednesday
04/03/02
For Blair Abney and the rest of the "Weekenders" - do you want to know what the Colorado River looks like so you can plan a fishing trip? Well, try clicking on one of these - Image 1 and Image 2! These pictures were taken today - water appears to be in good shape -- keep checking in this spot. Sometime next week we will begin posting at least a weekly fishing/water clarity report with pictures for the Colorado River. These images will be taken at the Colorado River Bridge on Highway 521. Thanks, Blair, for the suggestion! Fishing was bad today. The wind is still keeping most of the fishermen out of the bays. Capt. Don Wood reported that his party caught several trout over in West Matagorda Bay wading along the south shoreline.
Tuesday
04/02/02
Not much to report today. A few of the fishing guides went out ( mostly to West Matagorda Bay ) and came in with fair catches. Not many other fishermen on the bays today.
Monday
04/01/02
Wadefishermen along the south shoreline of West Matagorda Bay were able to bring in a few trout, sheephead, and reds. All in all, it was a pretty slow day for fishing.
