Offshore was great again today with catches of the same kinds of fish as earlier this week - lots of them! In East Matagorda Bay trout and some reds were caught along the south shoreline by wadefishermen. In West Matagorda Bay we had reports of trout and reds caught along its south shoreline, too. Bait used was either live shrimp or croaker or artificials of some type - pumpkinseed or plum were good choices. The surf was hot for trout again today - they were striking on live bait such as shrimp, croaker, and menhaden.

There appears to be plenty of live bait available for those of you venturing out into the bays. Rawlings Bait Camp has a great supply of live shrimp and offshore baits, although they were low on croaker this evening. Skipper Osborne of Skipper's Bait and Tackle at Matagorda Harbor has plenty live shrimp and croaker and the offshore bait, too.

We have noticed that the mosquitoes are large enough to be suitable substitutes for bait if you are unable to find live shrimp locally.

Offshore produced a goldmine today - lots of red snapper, ling, kingfish, dorado, dolphin, amberjack, and shark. It was pretty slow in both bays. There were some trout and reds caught along the south shorelines of both bays using artificials. There were nice trout and some reds caught in the surf today on menhaden, croaker and live shrimp. Skipper's Bait and Tackle at Matagorda Harbor has plenty of live shrimp and croaker available.

East Matagorda Bay produced several 6 lb. trout today along the south shoreline using Bass Assassins and topwaters while wadefishing. Other catches included flounder, trout and redfish. West Matagorda Bay produced a lot of small trout (big enough to be legal) along the south shoreline near Green's Bayou. There were also some nice trout and redfish caught at the mouth of the Colorado River on live shrimp - not at the jetties, though. There were a few bull reds caught off the fishing pier at the beach. I was unable to get photos of the Colorado River today because of the weather. However, a new report is being posted today.

I guess this past weekend was SO good for fishing that everyone stayed home today and rested. I really had a hard time tracking down any reports. There were a few reports of trout being caught over in West Matagorda Bay along the south shoreline by some wade fishermen using artificials. There was another report of a few reds caught tight against the shoreline using a gold Mirrolure. The pier at the beach produced a few bull reds on cut bait. All in all, a slow day of fishing, but more or less productive for those who ventured out.

Another good day of fishing here at Matagorda! Offshore was really good - lots of catches of red snapper, dorado, and ling. Both East and West Matagorda Bays were productive along the south shorelines for trout and some redfish for both wade and drift fishermen. There was no report available for the fishing pier at the beach.

Wow! Really a good day fishing everywhere! Offshore there were limits of red snapper being caught, as well as catches of grouper, dorado, kingfish and ling. There was an 8+ lb. speckled trout brought out of East Matagorda Bay today along with other catches of trout - these were caught on live bait. Some redfish were caught in Crab Lake. Lots of trout and undersized reds were caught along the south shoreline of West Matagorda bay using live shrimp under a popping cork. Not much to report from the fishing pier at the beach - the water was muddy and non-productive.

At the fishing pier at the beach, fishing wasn't good today. West Matagorda Bay had a good day of fishing, though. Lots of trout and a few reds were caught around Shell Island and Mad Island Slough by drift fishermen using live and artificials. The south shoreline of West Bay also produced limits of trout. Offshore there were limits of red snapper and dorado being caught at the rigs.

The wind caused problems again today - not much to report. There were some catches of trout along the south shoreline of West Matagorda Bay, and that's about it. One guide fishing that area, however, did come in with 8 trout, 2 reds, and 5 flounder. Tomorrow the wind should not blow as hard...
Thursday

Slim pickings today! Scattered catches of trout were brought in from the south shoreline of West Matagorda Bay -- down near Green's Bayou. Most were caught on artificials such as Bass Assassins in pumpkinseed-type colors. We did see one large redfish come in on a nice stringer of trout from the Green's Bayou area. But, for the most part, the catches were not that good.
Wednesday
05/22/02
In West Matagorda Bay wadefishing along the south shoreline in the Green's Bayou area was pretty good - mostly trout and a few flounder brought in from there -- using soft plastics for bait. The jetty was producing some fish - whiting, drum and a few sand trout.
Tuesday

Along the south shoreline of East Matagorda Bay, several people were able to catch flounder using Flounder Pounders for bait. There were also lots of small reds caught in the same area. Around the Locks area there were some nice flounder caught today. In West Matagorda Bay the north shoreline produced a couple of limits of nice trout caught on live shrimp, and drifting in the bay produced a few trout, too. Down at the beach on the pier there were whiting, drum and trout being caught on live shrimp. The wind is really blowing out of the southeast again this evening.
Monday

There were scattered reports of trout, redfish and sheepheads being caught in both bays today - some of our reports came from fishermen who fished the north shorelines of the bays. There are still some reports of drum and sheephead being caught at the pier.

There were reports of trout being caught in the surf today using live shrimp and artificials. Had a good day at the pier - using cut bait produced reds and some large black drum.

Drifting in Oyster Lake produced some reds, trout, flounder and sheephead, but they were mostly undersized.

The wind is still keeping the fishermen out of the bays. However, we had one report of a fishing guide and his party bringing in some redfish, flounder, and sheephead which they caught on live shrimp.
Monday

No fishing report available today because of the wind and weather.
Sunday

Another bad day of fishing - there were a few reds brought in from West Matagorda Bay - wind is still keeping the fishermen "at bay"...!
Saturday
05/11/02
Fishing was pretty bad today - slim pickings...I didn't see any of the fishing guides going out, and there were only a few other fishermen out in the wind -- and very few fish were caught.
Friday
05/10/02
The Greens Bayou area is still the area to be in, but the wind is keeping most of the fishermen at home. Those who are brave enough to venture out and wade using soft plastics have been able to bring home fair stringers of trout with a few flounder and reds mixed in. The wind was still really bad today, though. No report from the fishing pier.
Thursday
05/09/02
West Matagorda Bay produced nice stringers of trout for wadefishermen on Norton Sand Eels in a rootbeer/chartreuse combination.
Wednesday
05/08/02
In West Matagorda Bay all the fishing action has been down around Greens Bayou on the south shoreline east of the jetties. There were a few trout caught there today, along with some redfish, black drum, and whiting. The wind is still terrible down here, making the water in the bays off-color.
Tuesday

Not many fishermen went out today because of the wind. Those who did venture out, though, caught some nice trout in the Greens Bayou area using Norton Sand Eels in rootbeer/chartreuse color.
Monday

A few trout and black drum were caught in West Matagorda Bay, as well as some gafftop and whiting in the Colorado River down near Rawlings Bait Camp. Other than that, it was a poor day fishing.

Fishing was good everywhere today - a nice day for a fishing tournament! Some nice catches of trout were caught by drift fishermen in the middle of the bay and by wadefishermen around Brown Cedar Flats. In West Matagorda Bay the south shoreline from Cullens to Greens Bayou there wre trout, redfish and some flounder caught. All fish were caught on live shrimp, Bass Assassins, Corkies, and other topwaters. It was too rough to do any good at the pier on Matagorda Beach.
