Another slow day...there were
some whiting being caught at the fishing pier/jetty. A few trout
came out of East and West Matagorda Bay -- mostly caught along
the south shoreline on artificials. |
Tuesday
07/30/02 |
Another day with not much happening
on the fishing front. There were some stringers of trout brought
in from the south shoreline of West Matagorda Bay -- no other
reports. |
Monday
07/29/02 |
Real slow day of fishing here
- very few boats out in the bay. East Bay did produce a few
flounder and some trout -- and that's about it. It's still windy
and the water is muddy. |
Sunday
07/28/02 |
Sorry I missed posting the fishing
report yesterday - we were out of town. Looks like no news isn't
always good news in fishing reports. Yesterday there were a
few trout caught but it wasn't a real good fishing day. David
Mintz of Van Vleck went out yesterday - he reports that Matagorda
had no live shirmp anywhere. His party caught a few small trout
on artificials, but the wind started blowing hard by noon and
messed up the water. The middle of the bay was rough and muddy.
Today was pretty much the same story. A few guides took parties
out but were back in early with few catches. The wind was bad
today, too. Thanks, David, for your report on yesterday's fishing. |
Friday
07/26/02 |
A day of fishing just about
like yesterday -- winds were still out of the southwest. In
East Matagorda Bay there were some trout being caught on live
shrimp and soft plastics along the south shoreline on the west
end of the bay around the Three Mile area. West Matagorda Bay
produced some trout along the south shoreline around Cotton's
and Green's Bayou areas. Some stringers of trout came in from
the surf using live shrimp under a popping cork and a few trout
and whiting caught off the fishing pier using live and dead
shrimp. |
Thursday
07/25/02 |
Not as good a day today as we
had yesterday. There were some trout caught in both bays along
the south shoreline -- not a lot, though, because of the west
wind. There were some trout caught in the surf by people who
drown down the beach and fished. There were also some trout
caught by boats that went out the jetties and turned right and
fished the surf by boat. |
Wednesday
07/24/02 |
A good fishing day today - all
around! East Matagorda Bay was good for stringers of trout along
the south shoreline over scattered shell for wading and drifting
using both artificials and live shrimp under a popping cork.
The same was true in West Matagorda Bay for the area down around
Green's Bayou. Good stringers of trout were caught at the surf
using live shrimp and live croakers. It looks like the situation
at the Locks is improving - not as long a wait, but still not
back to normal. |
Tuesday
07/23/02 |
A little here and a little there
- that's the word today. A few catches of trout in East Matagorda
Bay and a few in West Matagorda Bay -mainly using artificials.
The wind was out of the southwest, tearing up the bays again. |
Monday
07/22/02 |
A pretty slow day of fishing
today - because not many people went out. Those who did go to
East Matagorda Bay were able to catch a few trout along the
south shoreline. The same was true of West Matagorda Bay, too
- a few trout brought in from there. There were also trout being
caught in the surf using live shrimp over a popping cork and
topwaters. |
Sunday
07/21/02 |
No report from the fishing pier
or jetties at the beach. In East Matagorda Bay the south shoreline
was good for trout and redfish again today along the south shoreline
for drift fishermen and wade fishermen using artificials such
as topwaters and live shrimp under a popping cork. West Matagorda
Bay produced for those who made it through the locks - trout
along the south shoreline and tripletails at the wells. The
tripletails were caught using live shrimp under a popping cork.
Offshore had a really good day, too - amberjack, red snapper
and kingfish. Great day! |
Saturday
07/20/02 |
We received no report from West
Matagorda Bay today. However, fishing was excellent everywhere
else.In East Matagorda Bay there were trout, redfish, and flounder
being caught by wadefishing and drift-fishing along the south
shoreline over scattered shell -- using live bait and topwaters.
Offshore had a real good day, too, with lots of kingfish, ling,
red snapper, and dolphin being brought in. At the jetties and
fishing pier down at the beach there were catches of sand trout,
speckled trout, whiting, sheepshead, and some sharks. At that
location live and dead bait both were being used. In the surf
people were catching trout on live shrimp under a popping cork
and topwaters. |
Friday
07/19/02 |
We had a pretty good day of
fishing in Matagorda Bays today. In East Matagorda Bay there
were some good stringers of trout and some redfish caught by
wadefishermen along the south shoreline and by drifting over
scattered shell along that same shoreline. The winning baits
were live shrimp under a popping cork and soft plastics such
as Bass Assassins, etc. West
Matagorda Bay had a good fishing day, too -- but only for
the people patient enough to wait to go through the locks.
Those fishermen caught nice trout and reds along the south
shoreline of West Bay from the Cullen houses on westward.
For those of you who don't know where the Cullen houses are
-- as you follow the south shoreline going west, there are
two houses on the beach side before you reach Cotton's Bayou
and Green's Bayou -- those are the Cullen houses. Winning
baits in this bay were Norton Sand Eels and live shrimp under
a popping cork... If you go over there, wade and fish over
the grass beds. That's where the action was today. But remember
-- there's still a long wait at the locks, don't go through
the Diversion Channel, and the east end of West Bay is real
fresh right now anyway.
The pier and jetties produced
good fishing -- nice catches of trout, reds, and big whiting.
Fishing in the surf down the beach produced some nice trout
on topwaters and live shrimp. |
Thursday
07/18/02 |
All the bait camps here in Matagorda
were slow today - not many fishermen went out. There were some
reports of a few trout being caught on the south shoreline of
East Matagorda Bay and by drifting over midbay reefs. |
Wednesday
07/17/02 |
Fishing is still a little slow
from the bad weather we had earlier this week. Today in East
Mataogrda Bay wade fishing along the south shoreline produced
some trout and some redfish using soft plastics and topwaters.
There were also redfish caught on live shrimp under a popping
cork by drifting along the south shoreline over scattered shell.
|
Tuesday
07/16/02 |
No fishing report because of
another day of bad weather. Hopefully, this will be the last
"unfishable" day for awhile. |
Monday
07/15/02 |
No fishing report because of
bad weather. |
Sunday
07/14/02 |
Not a real good day of fishing
today - East Bay is still muddied up and West Bay is practically
inaccessible. There were a few catches of trout by wadefishermen
along the south shoreline of East Bay but for the most part
the catches were undersized. Intracoastal Canal had a lot of
fishermen anchored and fishing - catches were mostly small-sized
reds, a few sheepshead and some decent-sized croaker - bait
of choice was shrimp. |
Saturday
07/13/02 |
East Matagorda Bay produced
reds and trout in a few scattered places. However, the wind
was bad and muddied the bay up. Offshore was real good today
- lots of fish brought in and lots of people seasick because
of rough seas. The tournament continues tomorrow, but I've heard
that several will not even go out tomorrow because of the seas.
Nothing to report from the surf, but there were whiting and
sharks caught at the fishing pier. West Matagorda Bay is still
inaccessible for all practical purposes. Barges are lined up
waiting to go through the locks, and the locks are staying shut
-- only opening in stages to let barges through. The river and
Diversion Channel are full of trash and logs. I believe Wharton
County is receiving a lot of rain tonight, so the river situation
should get worse before it gets better. |
Friday
07/12/02 |
East
Matagorda Bay was the main fishing spot in the bays today.
Some trout were caught by drifting over scattered shell in
the middle of the bay using artificials and live shrimp under
a popping cork. There were birds working the north shoreline
early this morning - and some trout were caught there. Offshore
was very good today with lots of catches of all the usual
fish. Trout were also being caught in the surf - the surf
was slick but off-color.
If you go fishing
in West Matagorda Bay, you need to be aware of the following:
the river is on the rise, the Diversion Channel is full of
logs, and it is going to take quite a while to get through
the locks because the locks are staying closed. So, be prepared
to WAIT at the locks and go VERY CAUTIOUSLY through the Diversion
Channel if you're brave enough to try it. |
Thursday
07/11/02 |
Down on the east end
of East Matagorda Bay there were a few stringers of trout caught
by drifting over scattered shell. Working the birds on the north
shoreline produced some nice trout. The Green's Bayou area of
West Matagorda Bay was productive today for trout. |
Wednesday
07/10/02 |
On the east end of East Matagorda
Bay there were some trout caught by drifting over scattered
shell, and there were some big croaker brought in from the new
cut. On the west end of the bay there were some nice stringers
of trout caught in the same manner - drifting over scattered
shell using artificials such as Bass Assassins. In West Matagorda
Bay the Green's Bayou area was good for wadefishing - it produced
some nice stringers of trout. |
Tuesday
07/09/02 |
East Matagorda
Bay was a "blow-out" today - the wind has it all
messed up. The only fishing of note was done over in West
Matagorda Bay down near Green's Bayou on the south shoreline.
Some of the fishermen came away with a few keeper trout. However,
a lot of the fish caught were undersized redfish and trout.
Over in the Sargent area, the only catch of any interest was
some gafftop caught in the cut. |
Monday
07/08/02 |
Real windy today. West Matagorda
Bay produced some trout along the south shoreline while wade
fishing. In East Matagorda Bay there were some catches of trout
along the south shoreline. Not much going on today. |
Sunday
07/07/02 |
Most of the action was offshore
today. Lots of snapper, ling, amberjack, dorado, and big kingfish
were caught. In East Matagorda Bay, the best fishing was this
morning - trout were caught along the south shoreline by wadefishermen
and drift fishermen. Trout were also being caught in the surf
using live shrimp under a popping cork for bait. |
Saturday
07/06/02 |
In East Matagorda Bay today
it was good fishing. The south shoreline produced lots of fish
- good stringers of trout were caught by wadefishermen and driftfishermen.
Artificials and live shrimp under a popping cork were the baits
of choice. West Matagorda Bay also had a good day of fishing
along the south shoreline. Offshore was also good today - nice
catches of snapper, amberjack, king and ling. |
Friday
07/05/02 |
A very poor day of fishing today
- a lot of people went out fishing today, but not many fish
were brought back in. There were a few reports of some trout
being caught down around Greens Bayou and scattered catches
in East Matagorda Bay. |
Thursday
07/04/02 |
I had to look long and hard to find
a decent fishing report for today. The wind was blowing too
hard for good fishing. For the most part, fishermen came in
with a few scattered catches of trout, but we had a report of
some gafftop being caught in the surf. However, Linda's Bait
Camp in Sargent reports nice catches of trout, redfish, flounder,
and croaker - caught on live shrimp and artificials - all caught
on the east end of East Matagorda Bay or in the new channel.
|
Wednesday
07/03/02 |
Today we add
a report from a new source - Linda's Bait Camp in Sargent.
So, thanks to the folks down there. They reported that some
big reds, trout and big croakers were caught down on the east
end of East Matagorda Bay as well as at the new channel and
also said that some trout and reds were being caught up in
Caney Creek. Skipper's Bait and Tackle reports that in East
Matagorda Bay there were some trout caught by drifting over
scattered shell using Bass Assassins. In West Matagorda Bay
wadefishermen along the south shoreline caught some nice trout
using topwater She-Dogs.
Please check out our new feature
- Park
'N' Fish maps. I will post a new map each week
for as long as I can come up with new areas to fish! These
maps are for people who don't have a boat and have to rely
on their vehicles to take them to good fishing spots. This
week's map is of the Oyster Lake area that can be fished from
the bank -- good fishing! |
Tuesday
07/02/02 |
Wadefishing in East
Matagorda Bay along the south shoreline produced some trout.
Driftfishing over scattered shell produced some limits of nice
trout on Bass Assassins. The east wind has both bays muddied
up. |
Monday
07/01/02 |
In East Matagorda
Bay there were a few trout, reds, sheephead, and black drum
caught along the south shoreline using live shrimp. There were
a few croakers caught at Old Gulf Cut on shrimp. The threat
of rainstorms kept most people home. |
