The surf was really
good today. It was too rough for boats to go out the jetties
and down the beach, but you could drive down the beach and catch
some nice stringers of trout and big redfish using artificials
and live shrimp. In East Matagorda Bay there were also nice
stringers of trout and big redfish being caught by wadefishermen
along the south shoreline using topwaters, soft plastics like
Bass Assassins, or live shrimp under a popping cork. Good fishing! |

Today's report for East Matagorda
Bay is much the same as yesterday's - nice stringers of trout
were caught on the south shoreline on artificials and live shrimp.
The surf is still producing nice trout towards both the east
and west ends of the beach. At the jetty trout and reds are
being caught. It started getting rough today but those who went
west in boats were catching lots of trout on topwaters. |
Thursday
08/29/02 |
Wadefishermen along the south
shoreline of East Matagorda Bay brought in some nice stringers
of trout today. They were caught on soft plastics and live shrimp.
The surf seems to be heating up -- nice trout are being caught
in the surf on live shrimp under a popping cork and on artificials
like Bass Assassins, hoagies, etc. If you're in a boat, you
can turn east or west at the jetties and run along the beach
and fish. Or drive down the beach and find a spot -- they're
both good. |
Wednesday
08/28/02 |
East Matagorda Bay seems to
be the only place where there's any action today. There were
trout caught by drifting over scattered shell along the south
shoreline and in mid-bay, as well as by wadefishermen who waded
around the deeper shell reefs in the middle of the bay like
Drull's Lump. There were amberjack brought in from offshore
today - one boat had 4-5 amberjack, all in the range of 35+
lb. |
Tuesday
08/27/02 |
East Matagorda Bay produced
some trout by drifting over scattered shell in the deeper reefs
using topwaters and Bass Assassins. There was no report from
West Matagorda Bay. |
Monday
08/26/02 |
Monday fishing is usually slow
down here -- and today held true to form. There are still trout
and reds being caught by drifting over scattered shell reefs
and along the south shoreline over in East Matagorda Bay. St.
Mary's on the west end of East Bay was a good spot for trout
today, too. |
Sunday
08/25/02 |
We had a pretty good weekend
down here - mostly in East Matagorda Bay. There were trout being
caught yesterday and today by drifting over scattered shell
out in the bay and along the south shoreline. Live shrimp and
artificials were the bait of choice. Yesterday was good for
red snapper with several boats bringing in limits. The pier
at the beach produced an assortment of catches on live/dead
shrimp - some whiting, croaker, and small reds. |
Friday
08/23/02 |
Lots of trout were caught today
in East Matagorda Bay - drift fishing over shell reefs out in
the bay using a combination of live shrimp under a popping cork
and artificials like Rapala Skitter Walks, Top Dogs, and Bass
Assassins. Good colors were morning glory with a chartreuse
tail and fire tiger (on the Bass Assassins) and chartreuse Top
Dogs and orange colored Skitter Walks. Offshore they were catching
limits of red snapper. Looks like the start of a good weekend.
We had no reports from the surf, but it looks like the water
is starting to clear up. |
Thursday
08/22/02 |
We had a good day of fishing
over in East Matagorda Bay today. We saw lots of nice trout
brought in by drift fishermen who drifted over shell reefs using
artificials and live shrimp. It was a pretty day offshore today
- not many boats out but it was beautiful. Good Day! |
Wednesday
08/21/02 |
The south shoreline of West
Matagorda Bay produced a few keeper trout and reds on artificials,
but there were lots of small trout caught. There were some keeper
trout and reds caught using topwaters and drifting over scattered
shell in East Matagorda Bay. A few boats went offshore today
and came in with limits of red snapper. |
Tuesday
08/20/02 |
East Matagorda Bay produced trout
and a few reds for wadefishermen along the south shoreline using
soft plastics. On Monday through Friday the locks are staying
closed during the day so they can do some work on them. They
won't open them from 7:30 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. (I may be a little
off on the hours, though).
Check out the new pictures on the main
page! |

trout and reds along the south shoreline on artificials. In
West Matagorda Bay, the south shoreline produced mostly small-sized

it got rough. At the end of the Matagorda jetties, redfish were
caught on live/dead bait. |

No report from West Matagorda Bay,
the surf or the jetties. However, offshore had a good day today
with plentiful catches of red snapper and ling. The south shoreline
of East Matagorda Bay produced nice stringers of trout for wadefishermen.
Oyster Lake was a good producer today, too - nice stringers
of trout were caught on live shrimp under a popping cork. There
was a report of a 27 inch speckled trout being caught there. |

Rainy and windy weather kept most
fishermen in from the bays today. There were, however, some
nice stringers of trout caught on pumpkinseed/chartreuse Bass
Assassins in the Green's Bayou area of West Matagorda Bay today. |
| Tuesday
08/13/02 |
We had storms running around in Matagorda
Bay today so it was a pretty "light" day of fishing.
Over in East Matagorda Bay there were some scattered redfish
and trout caught along the south shoreline using artificials.
In West Matagorda Bay there were some nice stringers of trout
caught on plum/chartreuse and fire tiger Bass Assassins by wadefishermen
down around the Green's Bayou and Airport Flats areas.
Thanks to Chris Saulnier for sending us pictures
of the nice gafftop that he caught last weekend! |
| Monday
08/12/02 |
West Matagorda Bay produced a few
keeper trout and reds today - wadefishing along the south shoreline
using artificials such as firetiger, salt and pepper/chartreuse,
and morning glory/chartreuse Bass Assassins. It was pretty much
the same in East Matagorda Bay - a few keepers caught here and
there along the south shoreline. |

We had a pretty good weekend of fishing
down here in East and West Matagorda Bays. There were nice stringers
of trout caught along the south shoreline of both bays by wadefishermen
using artificials and live shrimp. The Green's Bayou area of
West Bay was real good for trout. East Matagorda Bay had some
good spots of birds working with trout being caught underneath
them. |
| Thursday
08/08/02 |
There's not much to report about
the fishing today. Tropical Depression Bertha kept most of the
fishermen at home. |
Wednesday
08/07/02 |
Fishing was good in the surf
again today. Lots of trout were caught on live shrimp and topwaters,
and reds were being caught on cut bait. At the jetties they
were catching reds and sand trout. East and West Matagorda Bays
produced nice catches of mostly trout along the south shoreline
of both bays. |
Tuesday
08/06/02 |
North shoreline of east bay
was good for drifting under the birds. Fishermen came away with
nice stringers of trout. No report from West Matagorda Bay,
though. However, the surf was real good. You could catch some
nice trout by driving down the beach and finding a spot or by
going out the jetties by boat and turning east or west and fishing
the surf. Baits to use in the surf were live shrimp under a
popping cork or topwater lures like Top Dogs or She Dogs. Offshore
was really good for catching kingfish and red snapper. |
Monday
08/05/02 |
Down on the south shoreline
at the east end of East Matagorda Bay there were trout being
caught by drift fishermen who fished under the birds. The jetties
were producing some reds and whiting using live and dead bait.
The surf was the best fishing, though. It was good fishing for
trout by driving down the beach and by going out the jetties
and turning east or west. Nice trout were being brought in using
live shrimp under a popping cork and topwater lures. |
Sunday
08/04/02 |
The best fishing today was in
the surf. There were lots of nice trout brought in for that
location. You could catch 'em by driving down the beach to fish
the surf or by going out the jetties in a boat and going east
or west and fishing the surf. Offshore was real good today with
catches of the usual - kingfish, red snapper, ling, etc. There
were some redfish caught near the jetties. East and West Matagorda
Bays only produced a few scattered catches of trout and reds. |
Saturday
08/03/02 |
We had a pretty good day of
fishing down here. In East and West Matagorda Bays there were
trout and reds caught along the south shorelines by waders and
driftfishermen who used artificials such as Bass Assassins or
live shrimp under a popping cork. Offshore was real good, too
- with lots of red snapper, ling, and kingfish brought in. Fishing
at the jetties/pier was pretty slow - there were some sand trout
and sharks caught. Some fishermen went out into the surf west
of the jetties and brought in a few trout from there. |
Friday
08/02/02 |
East and West Matagorda Bays
only prodcued a few scattered trout here and there - no concentrations.
Offshore fishing was good, though, with lots of kingfish and
red snapper being brought in. At the pier on the beach, there
were whitings, sand trout, and shark being caught on dead bait.
At Sargent people were catching whitings and a few reds by the
bridge and the same at the new cut. |
Thursday

In West Matagorda Bay there
were stringers of trout caught by wadefishermen along the south
shoreline near Green's Bayou using fire tiger Bass Assassins.
There were a few trout caught along the south shoreline in East
Matagorda Bay as well, but West Bay was the better choice today.
Flounder are being caught near the drawbridge in Matagorda by
people fishing off the bank. People have been catching trout
and sand trout in the river from around River Bend Tavern on
down to the mouth of the river at night under lights There were
red snapper, ling, dolphin and a few kingfish caught offshore
today. |
