Thursday
10/31/02 |
Not many fishermen were out
in the bays today. The winds were pretty high out of the northeast,
and that kept a lot of fishermen home. Those who did make it
out were able to bring home a few fish, though. In East Matagorda
Bay there were trout caught in the Bird Island area by fishermen
who drifted over scattered shell or worked the birds. Best baits
were Bass Assassins. There were a few wadefishermen out there,
too. Over in West Matagorda Bay the south shoreline produced
some nice redfish on topwaters and live shrimp. |
Wednesday
10/30/02 |
East Matagorda Bay was good
for those fishermen who worked the birds, drifted over scattered
shell, or waded the north shoreline -- it produced some nice
trout in th 24" to 26" range and some flounder using
artificials and live shrimp under a popping cork. There was
a long wait at the Colorado River Locks today. There were also
some trout caught in Oyster Lake by drift fishermen using red
shad Bass Assassins. |
Tuesday
10/29/02 |
The action was in East Matagorda
Bay today. Using soft plastics like Bass Assassins in a red
shad color or morning glory/chartreuse combination and working
the birds and drifting over scattered shell along the north
shoreline and midbay area produced some nice stringers of trout.
There were a lot of sand trout being caught, too. |
Monday
10/28/02 |
The brave souls who ventured
out in today's weather drifted over scattered shell, worked
the birds, and wadefished along the south shorelines brought
home stringers of trout with a few reds included. Bad weather
chased everyone in early, though. |
Sunday
10/27/02 |
East Matagorda Bay again! Mostly
working the birds and drifting over scattered shell produced
stringers of trout and some redfish using live and artificial
baits. We had a couple of reports of limits of red snapper and
some ling being caught offshore. |
Saturday
10/26/02 |
A rainy day down here in
Matagorda, but fishermen were active and we had lots of reports
of fish being caught. The best place to be was fishing under
the birds over in East Matagorda Bay - lots of stringers of
nice trout were brought in from there - baits used were soft
plastics and live shrimp under a popping cork. |
Friday
10/25/02 |
Another great day of fishing
in East Matagorda Bay! Stringers of nice-sized trout were caught
by working the birds, drifting over scattered shell reefs in
midbay, and wadefishing along the south shoreline. Baits of
choice were artificials and live shrimp under a popping cork. |
Thursday
10/24/02 |
In East Matagorda Bay there
were trout and redfish being caught by wadefishermen around
the Bird Island area using artificials. In West Matagorda Bay
trout and reds were caught on the south shoreline in the Green's
Bayou area on soft plastics. Oyster Lake again produced some
redifsh when drifting using live shrimp under a popping cork.
There were some nice trout caught near Palacios in West Matagorda
Bay by wadefishing using morning glory/chartreuse Bass Assassins. |
Wednesday
10/23/02 |
Fishing today was wet....It
rained hard today, the wind blew hard, and no one went out fishing. |
Tuesday
10/22/02 |
East Matagorda Bay - drifting
over scattered shell and working the birds produced some nice
stringers of trout and some redfish using soft plastics or topwaters.
Bad weather chased a bunch of fishermen in early today. |
Monday
10/21/02 |
East Matagorda Bay produced
a fair amount of trout, reds and flounder today. Most were
caught on the south shoreline toward the east end of the bay
by wadefishermen and those who worked the birds. Morning glory
Bass Assassins proved to be a good choice, as well as gold
Mirrolures.
There were reports of trout
and some redfish being caught along the south shoreline down
around Green's Bayou using artificial baits. |
Sunday
10/20/02 |
Fishing slowed down a little
today. In East Matagorda Bay working the birds produced some
nice stringers of trout. Drifting over scattered shell produced
some nice trout AND reds. In the Diversion Channel there were
trout and redfish caught on live shrimp under a popping cork.
In West Matagorda Bay the south shoreline in the Green's Bayou
area produced trout and redfish. Best all-around baits to use
today were live shrimp under a popping cork, Bass Assassins
in chartreuse and morning glory. Oyster Lake is still producing
some redfish. No report from the jetties or pier. |
Saturday
10/19/02 |
Friday's report - Even though
the wind blew hard, fishing was great. There were limits of
trout and redfish and some flounder caught on live shrimp
under a popping cork and artificials in East Matagorda Bay
along the south shoreline by drifting over scattered shell
reefs and by wading the same area. In West Matagorda Bay the
Green's Bayou area of the south shoreline produced trout and
reds on Bass Assassins and spoons. We had reports of redfish
being caught on topwaters in Oyster Lake, too.
Today's report - Before the
norther hit, trout, reds and flounder were being caught along
the south shoreline of East Matagorda Bay - mostly wadefishing
but a little driftfishing, too. Green's Bayou in West Bay
was good again today for trout and reds - about 50-50. Fishermen
were catching reds in Oyster Lake again. We had some reports
of redfish being caught in Mad Island Slough on live shrimp
under a popping cork. At the mouith of the cut going into
CrabLake in the Intracoastal Canal, there were lots of flounder
being caught on white/pink soft plastics. |
Monday
10/14/02 |
Not many fishermen went out
because of the north wind blowing strong. In East Matagorda
Bay, though, there were a few trout caught along the north
shoreline by drifting over scattered shell and fishing under
the birds using artificials.
Please bear with us for the
next week or so. I will be in the hospital for a few days,
so we may miss some days of posting fishing reports. However,
I expect to be back in full swing by the weekend. 8-) |
Sunday
10/13/02 |
Fishing was fair this morning,
but the north wind picked up this afternoon and messed up fishing.
Before the wind picked up, though, there were trout caught by
wadefishermen on artificials along the north shorelines of East
and West Matagorda Bay. |
Saturday
10/12/02 |
Fishing was real good over in
East Matagorda Bay today for trout, reds, and flounder. Wadefishing
and drifting over scattered shell reefs using live shrimp and
artificials was able to produce nice catches. There weren't
many birds working today, though. West Matagorda Bay also produced
some catches of trout and reds for wadefishermen. Boats coming
in from offshore had nice catches of ling and red snapper. |
Friday
10/11/02 |
Pretty good day of fishing all
over, but the best fishing was in East Matagorda Bay. Along
the north shoreline, wadefishermen and drift fishermen had nice
catches of trout and reds, as well as those who fished under
the working birds. The east end of the bay proved productive
for trout and reds, too. Baits of choice were live shrimp under
a popping cork and artificials like topwaters and soft plastics
with chartreuse colors. At the jetties, there were some nice
reds caught, and the mouth of the Colorado River produce quite
a few flounder. Over in West Matagorda Bay around Twin Island
and Shell Island there were good catches of reds using live
shrimp. A few boats went offshore and came in with decent-sized
catches of ling and red snapper. |
Thursday
10/10/02 |
All the action was on the north
shoreline today because of the high winds blowing from the north.
Wadefishermen, drift fishermen and those who fished under the
birds were able to bring home some nice trout and reds from
this area. |
Wednesday
10/09/02 |
There were some trout caught
over in West Matagorda Bay on the south shoreline on the east
end of the bay by wadefishermen using soft plastics. In East
Matagorda Bay there were some trout and reds caught on soft
plastics down on the south shoreline by wadefishermen and by
drifting over shell reefs using artificials. The bad weather
kept most fishermen at home, though. |
Tuesday
10/08/02 |
East Matagorda Bay produced
a few trout and reds by drifting over scattered shell on the
south side of the bay using soft plastics - Bass Assassins/Norton
Sand Eels in fire tiger, plum/chartreuse, and red shad colors.
There were also trout and reds caught at Oyster Lake on live
shrimp under a popping cork and red shad Bass Assassins. |
Monday
10/07/02 |
A slow day of fishing around
Matagorda Bay....all our reports came from East Matagorda Bay.
Wadefishing along the south shoreline produced a few trout and
reds using artificials like Bass Assassins. There were some
spotty catches of reds, gafftop, and whiting in the Colorado
River around the pontoon bridge and on toward the beach. We
heard that over the weekend someone hooked a little tarpon at
the jetties but didn't land it.
Thanks to Martin Pena for the fishing report - his fishing party
caught three reds at the mouth of the Colorado River on Saturday
morning - 39", 41" and a 42". Wow! Great catch!
Next time send pictures!!! The law about keeping over-sized
redfish is as follows: During a license year, one red drum over
the stated maximum length limit may be retained when affixed
with a properly executed Red Drum Tag and one red drum over
the stated maximum length limit may be retained when affixed
with a properly executed Bonus Red Drum Tag. Any fish retained
under authority of a Red Drum Tag or a Bonus Red Drum Tag shall
be counted in addition to the daily bag and possession limit.

Sunday
10/06/02 |
Fishing was slower today than
yesterday. East Matagorda Bay had some catches of trout and
reds by drifting over scattered shell and wadefishing along
the south shoreline. There were also limits of flounder gigged
last night along the south shoreline of the bay. There were
also some reds caught over in West Matagorda Bay down in the
Green's Bayou area. |
Saturday
10/05/02 |
Good day of fishing in most
places! There were some reds and flounder caught along the Intracoastal
Waterway. At the jetties at the beach there were some nice bull
reds brought in using cut bait (mullet). Over in West Matagorda
Bay there were trout and redfish caught by wadefishermen along
the north shoreline around Shell Island early in the day. Drifting
in Oyster Lake produced some nice reds on artificials. There
were also some limits of trout caught on the south shoreline
of West Bay by wadefishermen.
In East Matagorda Bay there was a fair amount of
trout caught by drift fishermen and wade fishermen using the
usual combination of artificials and live shrimp. The boats
that went offshore came back in with some nice catches of
red snapper.
We also had a report of some trout being caught up
the river under lights at night.

Friday
10/04/02 |
Most of the fishing done today
was done over in East Matagorda Bay, but even so, it was pretty
slow. There were scattered reports of trout being caught by
drifting over scattered shell and wadefishing along the south
shoreline. Most fish were caught on the west end of the bay
on a combination of topwaters, soft plastics and live shrimp
under a popping cork. At the jetties there were some nice-sized
reds caught on dead shrimp and cut bait. |
Thursday
10/03/02 |
There didn't seem to be a lot
of fishermen out today, but those who went to East Matagorda
Bay did fairly well. Drifting over the deeper reefs down on
the west end, drifting under the birds along the north shoreline,
and wadefishing along the north shoreline all proved to be good
spots to be in. Baits of choice were Norton Sand Eels in tequila
gold color, Skitterwalkers in black w/ orange belly, and other
soft plastics and topwaters. |
Wednesday
10/02/02 |
East Matagorda Bay produced
limits of trout and redfish and some flounder. The hot spots
were wading along the south shoreline and drifting over scattered
shell reefs on the west end of the bay. Baits used were Norton
Sand Eels, topwaters in a chartreuse or bone color, and some
live shrimp under a popping cork. Surf is too rough to be producing
much. |
Tuesday
10/01/02 |
A much slower day of fishing
today. There were a few limits of trout caught over in East
Matagorda Bay by wadefishermen along the south shoreline, but
not many people went out today. |
