November 2002 Fishing Reports

Saturday
11/30/02
East Matagorda Bay was real productive again today. There were limits of trout caught by working the birds this morning -- this afternoon the birds played out but drifting over scattered shell in midbay was just as productive. Bull reds are being caught in the surf and trout are being caught in the river around River Bend Restaurant. Over in West Matagorda Bay there were some really good catches of redfish down in the Green's Bayou area along the south shoreline. Another good day of fishing!
Friday
11/29/02
Lots of trout and redfish were brought in from East Matagorda Bay today - most were caught by drifting under the birds using artificials and live bait. Lots of fishermen were able to limit out on fish. There were lots of black drum caught in the river and at the jetty. I had one report of some nice reds coming out of West Matagorda Bay, but I didn't find out the location fished.
Thursday
11/28/02
Happy Thanksgiving - no fishing report today because of turkey dinners.
Wednesday
11/27/02
No fishing report today because of the weather.
Tuesday
11/26/02
I could only find one person who went out fishing this morning - Pluggin' Charlie Paradoski. He caught 5 trout in East Matagorda Bay before the weather got bad and came in by 9:30 a.m. Weather has turned bad.
Monday
11/25/02
Drift-fishing out in East Matagorda Bay over the deeper reefs like Kilbride Reef, Raymond Landing Shoal, and Long Reef produced limits of trout. Wadefishing today was not really productive in most spots. The Colorado River still isn't "right" - trash still in river, water is off color, still fresh, and no bait working.
Sunday
11/24/02
At the jetties at Matagorda Beach fishermen were still catching reds, croaker, and sheephead. Down the beach a few reds were being caught. Over in East Matagorda Bay there were some trout caught by working the birds and by drifting over scattered shell.
Saturday
11/23/02
At the jetty on Matagorda Beach there were redfish, croaker, flounder, and sheephead being caught. Fresh dead shrimp was used for bait for all but the redfish -- they were biting on cut bait. Down the beach reds and bull reds were being caught in the surf. Flounder were caught in the cuts leading into East Matagorda Bay and near the Matagorda Locks. In East Matagorda Bay the best spots were wading and drifting over scattered shell - trout and reds were caught on live shrimp under a popping cork or artificials such as soft plastics (Bass Assassins, Norton Sand Eels, etc.) A pretty good day of fishing!
Friday
11/22/02
There were some trout and reds caught in the protected areas of the south shoreline of West Matagorda Bay down near Green's Bayou by wadefishermen. Over in East Matagorda Bay there were trout caught by wadefishermen along the north shoreline an by drifting over the deeper shell out in the middle of the bay. A few flounder were caught in the cuts leading into East Matagorda Bay, and there are a few nice trout being caught by the bridge in Matagorda at night.
Thursday
11/21/02
Fishing was good early this morning in East Matagorda Bay but slowed down as the day went on. This morning, though, drifting over the deeper shell reefs in mid bay was productive for trout, as well as wading along the north shoreline. Soft plastics seemed to work well as did live shrimp.
Wednesday
11/20/02
In East Matagorda Bay there was a fair amount of nice, big trout caught by wadefishermen and by drifting over scattered shell along the north shoreline. There was a report of some trout being caught over in West Matagorda Bay along the north shoreline near Shell Island and Twin Island. All fish were caught on live shrimp or Bass Assassins.
Tuesday
11/19/02
Limits of trout and redfish were brought in from East Matagorda Bay today by working the birds, drifting over scattered shell, and wadefishiing along the north shoreline -- using live and artificial baits. It was just a good day of fishing! So, come on down!
Monday
11/18/02
East Matagorda Bay had some reds and trout caught by drifting and wading along the south shoreline using artificials and live shrimp under a popping cork. High south winds hampered fishing for most of the day, though.
Sunday
11/17/02
Boy, was it cold early this morning out in the bay!!! It warmed up quickly, though, and fishing turned out to be pretty good. There were some nice stringers of trout caught under the birds in East Matagorda Bay today, using soft plastics and live shrimp under a popping cork. Wadefishing over the deeper reefs produced nice stringers of trout, also.
Saturday
11/16/02
It's been very windy down here today - few people went out fishing. There were a few trout caught over in East Matagorda Bay along the north shoreline and a few flounder caught in the cuts going into the bay.
Friday
11/15/02
East Matagorda Bay produced trout caught by working the birds on the north shoreline - winds were 15-20 miles per hour. Fishing the cuts produced some flounder using live/dead shrimp. Some reds are being caught in Intracoastal Canal at the pontoon bridge in Matagorda, too.
Thursday
11/14/02
We only got a report for East Matagorda Bay today. The south shoreline was fair for trout for wadefishermen using Bass Assassins and topwaters such as She Dogs. There were some trout caught by fishing under the birds, too.
Wednesday
11/13/02
Nice stringers of trout were caught in East Matagorda Bay today by wadefishermen along the north shoreline using Bass Assassins, and working the birds also produced some nice trout. Over in West Matagorda Bay there were nice trout caught by wadefishermen down around the Green's Bayou area on the south shoreline using soft plastics such as Norton Sand Eels.
Tuesday
11/12/02
Pretty slow today...there were some catches of trout by wadefishermen along the north shoreline on the west end of East Matagorda Bay using Bass Assassins, and there were some trout caught by drifting under the birds. Other than that, not much to report.
Monday
11/11/02

Another slow day of fishing down here. There were a few trout caught along the north shoreline of East Matagorda Bay down on the west end of the bay, and we had reports of some trout and reds being caught over in West Bay.

There is a FISHING TOURNAMENT on Wednesday, November 13 being put on by Wharton County Sheriff Association. It is open to anyone. Regristration can occur up until 6:00 a.m. on the day of the tournament. Thanks to John Gully for letting us know about it. Anytime you have fishing news or tournament news you would like included in the daily fishing report or in the weekly newsletter, just send it to me - I'll be glad to put it in!

Sunday
11/10/02
Fishing slowed down today because of the wind. There were a few trout caught over in East Matagorda Bay on the south and west sides. The surf was too rough so no report from there.
Saturday
11/09/02
Bull reds were caught at the jetty and in the surf using cut bait. In East Matagorda Bay stringers of trout were caught by working the birds and drifting over scattered shell using live shrimp and artificials. The west end of the bay proved to be a good spot to fish.
Friday
11/08/02
Well, I think the Colorado River locks are still closed to pleasure boat traffic. At the jetty on Matagorda Beach, there were bull reds being caught on cut bait, trout being caught on live shrimp, and whiting being caught on dead/live shrimp. Fishing was about the same in East Matagorda Bay today as it was yesterday -- just not quite so good. There were still trout to be caught by drifting over scattered shell in midbay and working the birds on the west end.
Thursday
11/07/02
A real good day for fishing down here in Matagorda! Over in East Matagorda Bay everyone came home with a nice stringer of trout. Drifting over scattered shell and working the birds on the west end of the bay using soft plastics or live shrimp under a popping cork was very productive.
Wednesday
11/06/02
Fair day of fishing in East Matagorda Bay today - wadefishing, drifting over scattered shell, and working the birds - north shoreline and west end of the bay. There were some nice stringers of trout caught there using artificials such as Bass Assassins and other soft plastics. The locks were closed today and should be closed tomorrow, so you will probably be unable to get to West Matagorda Bay from Matagorda.
Tuesday
11/05/02
We had a few reports of trout being caught in East Matagorda Bay by working the birds using soft plastics for bait. However, few people went out fishing today. Tomorrow looks to be a better day of fishing.
Monday
11/04/02
Wet, windy, and waterlogged! - No fishing report.
Sunday
11/03/02
East Matagorda Bay - a few fishermen went out today and reported catching trout by drifting under the birds and over scattered shell in midbay - using artificials such as Bass Assassins and Norton Sand Eels. There were also some nice bull redfish caught in the surf about 10 miles down from the pier - using live mullet and cut bait.
Saturday
11/02/02
Bad weather kept all but the die-hard fishermen at the dock today. Rain fell most of the day. However, those who did make it out into East Matagorda Bay were able to catch a few trout down near Bird Island by wading and drifting that area.
Friday
11/01/02
Windy, windy, and more windy! Fishing was poor today because of the high winds in the bays. The fishermen who went out, though, caught a few trout and some reds and flounder down on the east end of East Matagorda Bay drifting over scattered shell and wadefishing around Bird Island.
