Butterfly Gardening

Having a garden that attracts butterflies can be as easy or as complicated as you wish to make it. With a basic knowledge of local species of butterflies, what their needs are at all stages of their lives, and learning to control garden pests without hurting your butterfly population, you have what it takes to make your yard a "happy butterfly hideaway"! Whether you add a few butterfly-friendly plants to your herb or vegetable garden or add native plants to your current garden, choosing the right plants will guarantee that butterflies will be attracted to the habitat you've created for them -- and they'll keep coming back!

To attract butterflies, provide for their four basic needs:

    • Shelter
    • Water
    • A place to lay eggs
    • Food for larval and adult stages

Here is a listing of some butterfly-friendly plants for your new butterfly garden!
