Matagorda Locks
Directions: You will come into Matagorda from Bay City on Highway 60 (Fisher Street). Stay on Fisher Street, go past the blinking light (Stanley's will be on your left), and keep going on Fisher Street until you reach Orleans Street. Turn left on Orleans Street and go one block. Turn right and the road immediately forks. Take the left fork and follow the curve around. You will see a gate going into the Locks Office. Turn to the right and go down the hill into a parking area. You can fish all along this bank. It is the intersection of Intracoastal Canal and the Colorado River. On each side, you will see the river locks. After the river crosses Intracoastal Canal, it becomes the Diversion Channel.
Fishing: This area can be very good fishing at certain times of the year. You can expect to catch redfish, flounder, sheepshead, black drum, croaker, and an occasional speckled trout. It is a good place to catch flounder in the fall and spring when the flounder migrate between the bays and the open gulf.
Notes: The nearest stores are in Matagorda. Bait is available at Skipper's Bait and Tackle at Matagorda Harbor or at C & R's Bait Camp near the pontoon bridge.
