...where fishing meets the net
Note from the Webmaster
In the Bay

We'll have a full moon this weekend, so the fish will be feeding through the night - making midday the best BITE. The tidal flow during the next week should be real good, providing lots of baitfish movement. The best BITE should occur most of the day, so look for baitfish. If you can find the loons or pelicans diving, that's where the baitfish are, so look for the BITE wherever you find them!

Texas's premiere source for Fishing and Hunting information like reports, pictures, tides, articles, news, GPS waypoints, classifieds, and more!

Black Drum
The biggest Black Drum caught in Texas was caught in the Gulf of Mexico in 1988 - it was 51.18 inches long and weighed 81 lb. The IGFA world record was caught in 1975 in Lewes, Delaware and weighed 113 lb. 1oz.

What is the difference between hard and soft shelled crabs?

They are the same species. A soft shell crab is one that has just discarded its shell. Crabs which have just shed their shell hide in rocks or bury themselves in sand and mud to escape predators. They emerge after the new shell hardens.

Treble Hook
Triples the odds of your catching a fish. Quadruples the odds of your getting the hook caught in your thumb

Who knows what this South Texas weather is going to do this week! The weekend looks so-so - winds from the southwest and switching to the north when another norther blows down our way. Remember that fishing is usually good the day before a norther blows in...

In East Matagorda Bayou you should be able to catch some trout while drifting mid bay reefs using soft plastics such as Bass Assassins, Sand Eels, Trout Killers and Hogies. Along the north shoreline try for trout using Corkies. Brown Cedar Flats has been very productive lately. You should be able to bring home some reds and flounder if you try wading that area.

Fishing at the jetties or on the beach should produce reds, black drum, whiting, and croaker if you use live or dead shrimp. Up the Colorado River trout are being caught on green and glow beetles and DOA shrimp under the lights.

When weather conditions permit, offshore fishing will produce some nice catches of big red snapper.

In West Matagorda Bay the south shoreline is still the place to be if you're looking for redfish, although there have been some nice catches of reds by wadefishermen down in the southeast pocket around Old Parker's Cut area. Trout and redfish will be caught in the Diversion Channel on glow plastics and mullet.

What baits do we like this week? Red shad, plum/chartreuse, and glow/chartreuse, .

And remember - BIG LURES + SLOW PRESENTATION = BIG FISH!

And in the meantime - come on down and wet a hook! Enjoy our bays ... and be safe and courteous on the water!

Good Luck!

See ya next week,
Webmaster

P.S. I crave feedback, ideas for improvements, and fishing reports and pictures! Help me out.

This Week's Fishing Reports

Wednesday 2/12/03
There weren't many reports of fish being caught today. There were a few stringers of nice sized trout caught in East Matagorda Bay by drift fishermen around the Raymond Shoal area and south shoreline areas.

Tuesday 2/11/03
There was a fair amount of redfish and a few trout caught in East Matagorda Bay today down around the Brown Cedar Cut area and the Bird Island Reef using Bass Assassins. We also had reports of trout being caught on the west end of the bay by drifting over scattered shell around the tripod area. Wade fishing in West Matagorda Bay produced reds and trout (more reds than trout) along the south shoreline in the Green's Bayou using soft plastics. Offshore fishermen brought in some really nice sized red snapper.

Monday 2/10/03
In East Matagorda Bay there were a few trout and some reds caught by wadefishermen and by drifting over scattered shell around Bird Island Reefs and the north shoreline on the east end of the bay. Bass Assassins were being used for bait. Over in West Matagorda Bay there were some reds and trout caught by wadefishermen around the southeast pocket and Old Parker's Cut area.

Sunday 2/9/03
Fishing is pretty slow. Even though the day started out nasty, the sun came out and it was a pretty day. There were a few fishermen who went out today but few fish were brought in. There were a few trout caught over in East Matagorda Bay around the deeper shell reefs.

Saturday 2/8/03
W.O.W. - Waitin' on Weather.....

Friday 2/7/03
Another bad day for fishing; however, there were some reds caught up the Colorado River on fresh dead shrimp. We also had a few reports of trout being caught along the south shoreline of East Matagorda Bay by wadefishermen who waded the muddy areas.

Thursday 2/6/03
No fishing report available because of the weather.

Wednesday 2/5/03
In West Matagorda Bay the south shoreline around Green's Bayou area had a few reds, trout, and flounder caught by wadefishermen using soft plastics. The Diversion Channel is still producing some small reds, some keeper reds, and some trout for drift fishermen. In East Matagorda Bay there were a few trout caught drifting around the Raymond Shoal area. Whiting and sheepshead were caught in the river from Rawlings Bait Camp down to the mouth of the river. I need to point out, though, that there were few fishermen out there today -- only the real die-hards....

Kingfisher's Tip of the Week

Where to fish -
Fish in those places that you know are good spots. Look for an area which is near to a shoreline drop-off. It doesn't have to be close to a channel, but sometimes it is better. Find protected shorelines with access to open bay waters. Look for the baitfish to be working - you will find baitfish where the loons or pelicans are working.

Two types of lures for winter fishing -
1. Topwaters - She Dogs, Super Spook
2. Slow sinking mullet imitations - 51 series Mirrolure in deeper water, in shallows it will be a Corky and then a Catch 2000

Donna's husband Mike died suddenly one day. Donna was taking care of the funeral arrangements with the undertaker when she was asked how she wanted Mike's obituary to read. Donna asked the undertaker, "How much does an obituary cost?" The undertaker replied, "One dollar per word." Donna then said, "I want the obituary to read - MIKE IS DEAD." The under taker was an old fishing buddy of Mike's and he was a little disturbed by such a curt obituary, so he offered, "I'll make you a special deal since I knew Mike so well. I'll pay for half of the obituary out of my own pocket." Donna's face lit up and she replied, "Great. I want it to read - MIKE IS DEAD, BOAT FOR SALE."
