Colorado River Conditions and Fishing Report

Although it probably isn't kosher to have one of our own pages as Site of the Week, I'm going to do it anyway so that you'll check out this new feature that we've added. We've had requests from the Weekenders to add this, and we think we've found a good source for info. So, check it out!

and Fishing Report:

Hi, Guys!

Well, another week has gone by, and fishing didn't hold up like we wanted. However, this weekend promises to be a good one as far as fishing is concerned. The weather is going to be nice, with winds staying light and variable -- mostly southeast at 5-10 m.p.h. for the weekend. Early fog should burn off, not causing a problem with fishing.

West Matagorda Bay has been producing the most trout and redfish. Wading along the south shoreline using soft plastics in a red shad or jalapeno color should be a winner. Light-colored topwaters may also make a good showing in the same area of the bay.

East Matagorda Bay has been slow, but you can still bring home a nice stringer by fishing the reefs and over scattered shell - just remember that you probably still need a slow and deep approach. when using artificials. Soft bottom areas are promising right now. Red shad should be a good color, but be prepared to change from those dark colors as the water becomes more off-colored.

Fishing at the pier and on the beach using cut and dead bait may be what you need to catch a big redfish or some gafftop (yum!)

Although the Colorado River had cleared up and starting being a hot spot, this fresh water will put a stop to that until things get back to normal. Be sure to check out our new Colorado River Conditions/Fishing Report which will be posted once a week. Perhaps later we will increase it to 2-3 times a week.

Good Luck!

See ya next week,
Webmaster

This Week's Fishing Reports

Thursday, 04/11/02
Fair fishing today! Capt. Don Wood brought in some nice-sized trout with a 5 lb. and 6 lb.one in the bunch. He was wadefishing along the south shoreline of East Matagorda Bay using soft plastics. The West Bay was good for trout along the south shoreline for wadefishermen. No report of redfish or flounder being caught today, though.

Wednesday, 04/10/02
It wasn't a good day for fishing. The wind was blowing out of the northeast, keeping the water all messed up. There wasn't any bait working to key on, either. There were, however, some trout, a few flounder and a few redfish brought in from West Matagorda Bay by wadefishermen who fished along the south shoreline using soft plastics.

Tuesday, 04/09/02
A few trout, redfish and flounder came out of East Matagorda Bay today. This was reported by the game warden who sits near the boat ramp doing a survey sometimes - he said that not many people went out, and not much was brought in. Stay tuned for the Colorado River report tomorrow.

Bad Weather! -- Enough Said.

Sunday, 04/07/02
A real slow weekend of fishing - the weather was windy and chilly and kept most people out of the bays. There were a few trout and reds caught here and there but nothing worth noting.

Friday, 04/05/02
Fishing is still not real good. There were a few reports of trout being caught by wadefishermen down at Greens Bayou in West Matagorda Bay and drifting in the the Diversion Channel.

Thursday, 04/04/02
The only report I had of any fish being caught was Dr. Sher -- he caught 10 trout and 2 flounder in West Matagorda Bay.

Wednesday, 04/03/02
Fishing was bad today. The wind is still keeping most of the fishermen out of the bays. Capt. Don Wood reported that his party caught several trout over in West Matagorda Bay wading along the south shoreline.

Tuesday, 04/02/02
Not much to report today. A few of the fishing guides went out ( mostly to West Matagorda Bay ) and came in with fair catches. Not many other fishermen on the bays today.

This Week's Tip
Keep your reel in good shape so that it will be ready to pull in that giant trout when you catch him! First of all, be sure to rinse your reel after fishing because saltwater can really hurt it. Even though the main part of the reel is stainless steel, some of the parts probably aren't and will rust. And don't use a strong jet of water when washing your reel - it can wash the grease out of the reel. Use a soft mist instead.
