and Fishing Report:

Hi, Guys!

The weather still hasn't been right for fishing. The wind blew early in the week, messing up the water in the bay. No one is reporting any good catches of trout or reds.

Live shrimp or a good topwater lure is worth a try in Oyster Lake for reds. Depending on the direction of the wind, choose a good protected shoreline in either bay and give it a shot -- soft plastics in jalapeno or a dark color should produce as well as anything. The southeast winds should hold for the weekend, possibly getting a little gusty Saturday afternoon and Sunday, so the south shorelines look good. Get out of that boat and do a little "Matagorda mud-hogging" - that's your best bet!

As I said in my fishing report this week, the Colorado River is still off-color, but try some catfishing upriver and saltwater fishing downriver! And all you Weekenders, remember you owe me a fishing report!

Good Luck!

See ya next week,
Webmaster

This Week's Fishing Reports

Thursday, 04/18/02
Fishing is still bad. Water in the bays is still messed up from the winds. Fishing pier at the beach is still good for catching bull reds. The Colorado River is still off-color.

Wednesday, 04/17/02
Although the wind was not as strong as it has been, fishing is remaining slow this week. There are scattered reports of trout and reds being caught in both bays, but nothing in any great numbers. We are still receiving reports of bull reds and whiting at the pier.

Tuesday, 04/16/02
It was real windy again today, and not many fishermen went out. Surprisingly, though, there were reports of bull reds and whiting being caught on cut bait at the pier on the beach.

Monday, 04/15/02
Windy today - only a couple of parties went out - some trout were brought in, but nothing to get excited about. The Colorado River has gone back down to its regular level, but the water is still off-color. Might be good for catfishing right now, but saltwater fishing should stay bad for about another week.

Sunday, 04/14/02
Fishing was pretty good today, but not as good as yesterday. East Matagorda Bay produced nice trout along the south shoreline. Some nice stringers of reds and a few trout were caught along the south shoreline of West Matagorda Bay, too. Some big redfish were brought in off the pier at the beach-- they were caught on cut bait. Today was rougher offshore and in the surf - we received no report of those areas.

Saturday, 04/13/02
Fishing was good everywhere except the river. Nice trout were being brought in from East and West Matagorda Bays by wadefishermen along the south shoreline using live shrimp or artificials. The pier at the beach - good fishing with nice catches of drum and big whiting. Beach fishing is still good - big reds in the surf using cut bait. Even offshore was good - catches of red snapper being brought in.

Friday, 04/12/02
In West Matagorda Bay scattered trout were caught along the south shoreline on jalapeno Norton Sand Eels- a fair day of fishing over there. In East Matagorda Bay there were some trout being caught along the south shoreline -- catching them on She-Dog topwater lures. In the surf they were catching big reds and some gafftop -- at the pier they were catching big whiting and drum. Cut bait appeared to be what the big reds and gafftop were hungry for.

Thursday, 04/11/02
Fair fishing today! Capt. Don Wood brought in some nice-sized trout with a 5 lb. and 6 lb.one in the bunch. He was wadefishing along the south shoreline of East Matagorda Bay using soft plastics. The West Bay was good for trout along the south shoreline for wadefishermen. No report of redfish or flounder being caught today, though.

Wednesday, 04/10/02
It wasn't a good day for fishing. The wind was blowing out of the northeast, keeping the water all messed up. There wasn't any bait working to key on, either. There were, however, some trout, a few flounder and a few redfish brought in from West Matagorda Bay by wadefishermen who fished along the south shoreline using soft plastics.

This Week's Tip
CATCH AND RELEASE - Releasing your catch is the best way to keep the fish population flourishing:
  1. It is sporting.
  2. It gives the next angler a better chance of landing a fish.
  3. It is humane. And, in some cases, it’s the law.
Any fish will be stressed as a result of being caught. However, if it exhausted itself in a vigorous fight, had to be kept out of the water for awhile or had to be revived -- don’t release it into a strong current. If it doesn’t have the strength to maintain its equilibrium it will roll over on its side or back. To survive it must be able to keep itself upright to breathe. It must also have the strength to keep from being bounced on the bottom or rocks. So, release it where the current is less strong.
