In the Bay
There'll be a new moon this weekend - dark of the moon means that the fish will be eating early in the day and late evening. Tide action will be great this weekend so the bait should be moving. Water in the bays still off-color because of the winds.

Redfish Tails

Hi, Guys!

What can I say about this coming week? The wind is going to keep right on blowing from the south southeast throughout the weekend, I think. Looks like Saturday afternoon will be the worst of it, but the wind will be pretty strong on Friday and Sunday, too.

Your best bets will be along protected and south shorelines in both bays, although West Bay is a better producer right now. On an incoming tide, work the sloughs and guts along those grassy shorelines. Drifting over scattered shell may produce. The channel leading in to Crab Lake might be a spot to try - it's protected from the wind somewhat. Going west down the Intercoastal Waterway, it's between Mad Island Cut and Culver's Cut on the right side.

Topwaters - like Corkies and Top Dogs - and soft plastics such as Bass Assassins and Norton Sand Eels are always good, and the colors I would try are pumpkinseed, pepper, roach, or pearl -- and make sure they have chartreuse tails. Live shrimp or crab is worth a try, too.

Come on down - the big ones are just waiting for you to show up!

Good Luck!

See ya next week,
Webmaster

This Week's Fishing Reports

Thursday, 05/09/02
West Matagorda Bay produced nice stringers of trout for wadefishermen on Norton Sand Eels in a rootbeer/chartreuse combination.

Wednesday, 05/08/02
In West Matagorda Bay all the fishing action has been down around Greens Bayou on the south shoreline east of the jetties. There were a few trout caught there today, along with some redfish, black drum, and whiting. The wind is still terrible down here, making the water in the bays off-color.

Tuesday, 05/07/02
Not many fishermen went out today because of the wind. Those who did venture out, though, caught some nice trout in the Greens Bayou area using Norton Sand Eels in rootbeer/chartreuse color.

Monday, 05/06/02
Only a few fishermen went out today and reported a few catches of trout and redfish in West Matagorda Bay. The wind still has the water torn up in the bays.

Sunday, 05/05/02
A few trout and black drum were caught in West Matagorda Bay, as well as some gafftop and whiting in the Colorado River down near Rawlings Bait Camp. Other than that, it was a poor day fishing.

Saturday, 05/04/02
Fishing was good everywhere today - a nice day for a fishing tournament! Some nice catches of trout were caught by drift fishermen in the middle of the bay and by wadefishermen around Brown Cedar Flats. In West Matagorda Bay the south shoreline from Cullens to Greens Bayou there wre trout, redfish and some flounder caught. All fish were caught on live shrimp, Bass Assassins, Corkies, and other topwaters. It was too rough to do any good at the pier on Matagorda Beach.

Friday, 05/03/02
In West Matagorda Bay wadefishermen were bringing in limits on trout - caught using bone-colored topwaters, pink Corkies, fire tiger Bass Assassins and Norton Sand Eels. Whiting and some gafftop were being caught off the fishing pier at the beach in Matagorda. All in all, a good day of fishing!

This Week's Tip
SHARK ALERT! When wadefishing, watch for sharks! Even small sharks can get your stringer and leave you with nothing to take home! We've had reports of sharks down around Greens Bayou area really bothering wadefishermen. So, keep a lookout for the pests -- some of them can be pretty big!
