Note from the Webmaster
In the Bay
There will be a full moon this weekend - fish will be biting the best in the morning and not as much during the middle of the day. There will be great tide action this weekend so the bait should be on the move and the fish should be waiting in ambush at the sloughs and mouths of the bayous.

Redfish Tails

Hi, Guys!

Looks like the weather is going to turn hot again next week. Tomorrow (Friday) looks like it will be a bummer weather-wise; lots of wind gusting over the bays. It should drop off, though, for the weekend, making a couple of nice days for fishing. And I think the weather will hold for next week, clearing up the bays somewhat.

Live shrimp under a popping cork should produce redfish and trout for you in areas where you can fish the reefs. If you like using artificials, give Bass Assassins, Texas Trout Killers, and Norton Sand Eels a try - pumpkinseed/chartreuse, rootbeer/chartreuse, red shad are the colors catching the fish right now. A topwater like Top Dogs might call up that big trout, too.

The places to be this weekend are the shell reefs out in the center of the bays (you'll have better luck in West Bay), wading the south shorelines of both bays, fishing the grass on those shorelines, or drifting in Oyster Lake. Start watching for the birds to be working out in the center of West Matagorda Bay and drift in those spots.

Come on down and give it a try!

Good Luck!

See ya next week,
Webmaster

This Week's Fishing Reports

Thursday, 05/23/02

Slim pickings today! Scattered catches of trout were brought in from the south shoreline of West Matagorda Bay -- down near Green's Bayou. Most were caught on artificials such as Bass Assassins in pumpkinseed-type colors. We did see one large redfish come in on a nice stringer of trout from the Green's Bayou area. But, for the most part, the catches were not that good.

Wednesday, 05/22/02

In West Matagorda Bay wadefishing along the south shoreline in the Green's Bayou area was pretty good - mostly trout and a few flounder brought in from there -- using soft plastics for bait. The jetty was producing some fish - whiting, drum and a few sand trout.

Tuesday, 05/21/02

Along the south shoreline of East Matagorda Bay, several people were able to catch flounder using Flounder Pounders for bait. There were also lots of small reds caught in the same area. Around the Locks area there were some nice flounder caught today. In West Matagorda Bay the north shoreline produced a couple of limits of nice trout caught on live shrimp, and drifting in the bay produced a few trout, too. Down at the beach on the pier there were whiting, drum and trout being caught on live shrimp. The wind is really blowing out of the southeast again this evening.

Monday, 05/20/02

There were scattered reports of trout, redfish and sheepheads being caught in both bays today - some of our reports came from fishermen who fished the north shorelines of the bays. There are still some reports of drum and sheephead being caught at the pier.

Sunday, 05/19/02

The catch in East Matagorda Bay was very scattered today - here a fish, there a fish... Trout were being caught in the surf, though, on live shrimp and artificials. At the pier, reds, drum and sheephead were being caught on cut bait again. The north shoreline in West Matagorda Bay produced some nice trout and reds on live bait.

Saturday, 05/18/02

Although the day started off cloudy and windy, it cleared up this afternoon and the wind dropped off. There were scattered catches in both bays - but nothing consistent. There were reports of trout being caught in the surf today using live shrimp and artificials. Had a good day at the pier - using cut bait produced reds and some large black drum.

Friday, 05/17/02

At last we got some rain...unfortunately, fishing was pretty much out of the question, so there's no report available tonight.

This Week's Tip
Before you go out in search of that trophy fish, check your lures/baits. Saltwater causes rust...rust will weaken a bait quickly. If necessary, replace your hooks and split rings - or even the whole bait.
