In the Bay

The moon is almost new this weekend - your best fishing times should be early morning and late evening. Tide action will be good for most of the weekend and the bait should be moving well with the currents but will start slowing down on Sunday.

I found this site by accident one night and was surprised at what I found. All searches are neatly tied together on this site - if you search for your favorite fish, it will pull up articles, recipes, fishing reports, and more -- just tuned to that fish! It's pretty neat - check it out. I was impressed.

Redfish Tails

Hi, Guys!

It looks like this will be a very busy weekend down here in Matagorda. The 2002 Texas Oilman's Invitational Charity Fishing Tournament is being held Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Even though the fishing will be all along the Texas coast, there are going to be alot of tournament fishermen fishing in our bays. So, if you're coming down to fish, be prepared to jockey for those good fishing spots, and if you aren't going to fish, come on down anyway and watch the weigh-ins at Matagorda Harbor - should be lots of stuff going on!

The wind is going to help - and hurt - fishing this weekend. It won't be blowing hard, though, which will leave the bays pretty smooth, but it should be coming out of the east for most of the weekend. And we know how messed up the bay water can get from an east wind! It will probably switch to the southeast sometime this weekend - maybe Saturday evening and pick up a little bit. Traffic-wise, Sunday will be the best day to go because the tournament will be over...

The best spots to fish this weekend should be along the south shorelines of both bays and over reefs out in the middle of the bays. Look for areas with shell or grass beds -- they should be good spots.

Our favorite colors for artificials are pumpkinseed/chartreuse, red shad, fire tiger, limetreuse, and pepper/chartreuse -- use Bass Assassins, Texas Trout Killers, Norton Sand Eels, and topwaters. And of course, live shrimp under a popping cork or croaker is always good.

Fishing the Colorado River has improved a little this last week. We have some scattered reports of redfish being caught under lights at night upriver and a few reports from the Diversion Channel and the jetty area. They might be worth a try.

You might be a fisherman if...

  • Bass Pro has a private phone line just for you
  • You consider vienna sausage and crackers a complete meal.
  • You trade your wife's van for a smaller vehicle just so your boat will fit in the garage.

Welcome to our newest members - Randy, Daniel, and Bryan! Hope you enjoy the newsletters!

Come on down and give it a try!

Good Luck!

See ya next week,

This Week's Fishing Reports

Thursday - 06/06/02

It was a slow day of fishing today - few people went out. There were scattered reports of some trout and redfish being caught along the south shoreline of West Bay using soft plastics in a pumpkinseed color. Lots of preparations for the Oilman's tournament are going on down here. I will try to get some pictures this weekend..

Wednesday - 06/05/02

In East Matagorda Bay there were a few reports of trout and a few reds being caught along the south shoreline by wadefishermen. In West Matagorda Bay there were some trout caught by wadefishermen along the south shoreline in the Green's Bayou area. West Bay was better than East Bay. Lots of activity starting up today in preparation for the Oilman's Tournament which will be held down here on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday -- be prepared for boats everywhere!

Tuesday - 06/04/02

Not too much to report today - those who went out today came in with small fish - not many keepers.

Monday - 06/03/02

After a good weekend, everything slowed down today - partly because the fish weren't biting as well and partly because not as many people were out fishing. There were some reports of a few nice catches of trout down around Green's Bayou along the south shoreline of West Matagorda Bay.

Sunday - 06/02/02

Wahoo! A 63-pound one at that! Offshore was where the fishing was good today. There was a 63-pound wahoo brought in and weighed at Matagorda Harbor this afternoon. There were also red snapper, amberjack, ling, and dorado brought in from offshore in large numbers. Not too much was going on in West Matagorda Bay - a few reds were brought in. However, there were some nice catches of trout over in East Matagorda Bay along the south shoreline down on the east end - with several in the 6 lb. range. At the jetties there were trout and redfish being caught. A pretty good day over all.

Saturday - 06/01/02

Fishing in both bays was slow today - there were a few reports of people coming in with trout, redfish and flounder, but none in any quantity. The surf was full of trout and reds and were being caught on live shrimp and croaker. Offshore is still the BEST - people coming in with loads of fish.

Friday - 05/31/02

Offshore was great again today with catches of the same kinds of fish as earlier this week - lots of them! In East Matagorda Bay trout and some reds were caught along the south shoreline by wadefishermen. In West Matagorda Bay we had reports of trout and reds caught along its south shoreline, too. Bait used was either live shrimp or croaker or artificials of some type - pumpkinseed or plum were good choices. The surf was hot for trout again today - they were striking on live bait such as shrimp, croaker, and menhaden.

There appears to be plenty of live bait available for those of you venturing out into the bays. Rawlings Bait Camp has a great supply of live shrimp and offshore baits, although they were low on croaker this evening. Skipper Osborne of Skipper's Bait and Tackle at Matagorda Harbor has plenty live shrimp and croaker and the offshore bait, too.

We have noticed that the mosquitoes are large enough to be suitable substitutes for bait if you are unable to find live shrimp locally.

Thursday - 05/30/02

Offshore produced a goldmine today - lots of red snapper, ling, kingfish, dorado, dolphin, amberjack, and shark. It was pretty slow in both bays. There were some trout and reds caught along the south shorelines of both bays using artificials. There were nice trout and some reds caught in the surf today on menhaden, croaker and live shrimp. Skipper's Bait and Tackle at Matagorda Harbor has plenty of live shrimp and croaker available.

This Week's Tip
Surf fishing is good right now. Here's a few tips for all of you -
  • The deeper areas along the beach show up as darker water, and the shallow sandbars between them appear to be a lighter color.
  • You can tell how deep a gut is before you even get wet - the height of the waves as they break when they meet the sand bar will be a little taller than the depth of the gut.
  • Fish the guts in an orderly manner - first perpendicular to the beach - then parallel. The fish are usually in the deep guts.
  • Look for things that will attract fish--scattered shell, grass beds, protruding tree stumps - these areas will be an opportune place for fish to hide
