In the Bay

The moon is getting brighter and bigger - your best fishing times should be from morning to early/mid afternoon. Tide action will be sluggish for most of the weekend but should pick up on Monday. So, work harder to find those cuts where the bait are moving into the marshes. Just remember - No baitfish means no trout or redfish.

Hi, Guys!

Well, the end of another week - and with it comes the sweet anticipation of a beautiful weekend of fishing! Should be a good weekend to fish down here! Fishing will probably begin to taper off on Monday or Tuesday, but until then it should be great. Morning, midday and early afternoon should be the most active time of feeding. Tide action begins to improve around Monday, but other factors will make the fishing good till then.

It looks like we'll be graced with a weekend of light winds - they may play "ring-around-the-rosy" a little, south to southeast on Friday, on Saturday switch around to the northeast and then back to east or east southeast. But it should give us a weekend of smooth bays and surf.

It should be an excellent weekend to fish offshore. The wind won't be blowing too hard, and you'll be able to bring in just about any kind of offshore fish you want!

East Matagorda Bay should prove good for trout if you drift under the birds or over scattered reefs using live shrimp under a popping cork. Or you might try Bird Island area or the Oyster Farm. The south shoreline should produce using an artificial bait of your choice with a "glow" to it - try some of the Bass Assassins or Sand Eel colors. Keep an eye out for those spots where flounder like to lie in wait for baitfish around the cuts leading to the flats and throw something like a Flounder Pounder to them.

West Matagorda Bay is still going to be best along the south shoreline where you can find grass and deep shell - try artificials here or live shrimp under a popping cork.

What colors do we recommend this week? Try pepper/chartreuse, red shad, and black soft plastics. Topwaters like a Top Dog would be good in a bone color or bluetail. Gold or white Mirrolures may produce for you close to the grass tight along the shoreline.

This time of year you may also have luck with fire tiger, pearl or red shad Bass Assassins. The pearl and red shad will work much better for you if you dip the tail in chartreuse. Throw it out - let it drop - jig it. That should do the trick.

I don't understand how a river can look so "right" for fishing and have no one able to report any catches of note. But that seems to be the situation on the Colorado River. We have a few reports of fish being caught here and there, but I think what we really need is for some of you weekenders to come down and search out the hotspots and report back to me!

Come on down and give it a try!

Good Luck!

See ya next week,

This Week's Fishing Reports

Thursday - 06/13/02

Fishing was pretty good in East Matagorda Bay today. Wadefishermen and driftfishermen under the birds were able to bring home some nice trout using artificials and live shrimp under a popping cork. At the fishing pier there were a few trout and sharks caught.

Wednesday - 06/12/02

East Matagorda Bay provided the best fishing today. Drifting under the birds produced catches of trout when using live shrimp under a popping cork or artificial baits. West Matagorda Bay had a few reports of trout and reds being caught along the south shoreline. No report was available from the pier at the beach.

Tuesday - 06/11/02

Not much to report today. It was a poor fishing day all around - wind, tides, etc. all contributed. We had a few reports of trout being caught down on the south shoreline (east end) of East Bay - but no great quantity.

Monday - 06/10/02

The only place any fish were caught today was in West Matagorda Bay - along the south shoreline wadefishing. Some trout and reds were caught with a few of the trout being in the 5-6 lb. range.

Sunday - 06/09/02

Fishing slowed down today. There are still reds and some trout being caught at the pier at the beach. East Matagorda Bay produced a few trout, flounder and reds along the south shoreline, as did West Matagorda Bay. Nothing much from offshore - the wind picked up today, putting an end to offshore fishing for the weekend.

Saturday - 06/08/02

Another good day all over! The surf is producing lots of trout and reds; and the jetty is producing Spanisl mackerel, trout, reds, and sheephead - all on live shrimp. In West Matagorda Bay there were trout, redfish, and flounder caught around Shell Island and Mad Island Slough - drifting, anchoring and wading using live shrimp for bait. In East Matagorda Bay drifting/wading under the birds or over scattered shell was good for catching trout and redfish on live shrimp. We had another real good day offshore, too - with fishermen bringing in lots or the "regulars" - kingfish, ling, snapper, etc.

Friday - 06/07/02

A pretty good day of fishing down here! Fishing in the surf was really good today - driving down the beach in a vehicle or going west along the beach by boat! Lots of trout (up to 6 lb.) were caught using live shrimp under a popping cork or artificials. There were also trout and reds caught at the jetties. Offshore, of course, is still great with lots of fish of all kinds being brought in. East Matagorda Bay was excellent for trout and reds today - drifting or wading under the birds along the north shoreline using live shrimp or artificials produced good yields. And of course, everything down here is as busy as can be with the tournament going on!
