In the Bay

We've got a new moon tonight and the fish can't see to feed, so they're gonna be ready to BITE first thing in the morning and right before dark. We're gonna have real good tide action for most of the week, so the bait are going to be moving on the incoming and outgoing tides - perfect setup to catch some nice trout and reds. Set yourself at the mouth of a bayou and you'll be where the BITE is the BEST.

Kingfisher's Site of the Week

Hurricane and Storm Tracking

Since we're starting to see tropical weather systems around Matagorda Bay, I thought a site which gives hurricane info might be a good "Site of the Week". This site offers hurricane tracking and provides to up-to-date information about storms and hurricanes in the Atlantic and Pacific. It also includes animated plots using Java, plus data files and plots of past storms.

The biggest Amberjack caught in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Texas in 1994 was 115 lb and was 66.5 inches long. The largest one on IGFA records for the whole world was caught in 1981 in Bermuda and weighed 155 lb. 10 oz.

Is a stone crab harmed when its large
claw is broken off??

Fishermen often break off the large claw and throw the crab back into the water. If the break is made at the first joint, the crab is not harmed. The stone crab can and does sever its own claw at the first joint (by muscular contraction) to escape from danger.

Redfish Tails

Hi, Guys!

It looks like our weather is going to depend on what comes to us from the tropics. We should have southeast and easterly winds most of the week, though, between 10-15 mph. -- it may make the bays a little choppy now and then. And of course, keep an eye out for that thunderstorm to come up in a hurry.

The surf should be the hottest fishing spot around this week with plenty of trout and reds being brought in. Use live shrimp or mullet, or topwaters like She Dogs or Super Spooks.

If the weather stays good enough to go offshore, it should be good fishing for kingfish, red snapper, ling and dolphin. Be sure to check your weather, though, before heading out and monitor it during your trip.

At night you should be able to catch some nice trout under lights in the new cut near Caney Creek using live shrimp, mullet, or soft plastics. As long as the wind holds from the southeast, the south shoreline should hold some good spots to fish - use live shrimp or soft plastics in a pumpkinseed/chartreuse or firetiger color.

Trout are good over grass beds in West Matagorda Bay on pumpkinseed and plum soft plastics. The south shoreline should hold some good fishing spots down near Green's Bayou.

At the pier and jetties, live mullet and shrimp should produce for you -- and you should have some nice catches of trout and reds, along with your usual catches of whiting, sheepshead, etc.

What baits do we like this week? Pearl/chartreuse and chrome topwaters and plum/chartreuse, pumpkinseed/chartreuse, and firetiger soft plastics!

And in the meantime - come on down and wet a hook! Enjoy our bays!

Good Luck!

See ya next week,
Webmaster

This Week's Fishing Reports

Thursday 08/08/02

There's not much to report about the fishing today. Tropical Depression Bertha kept most of the fishermen at home.

Wednesday 08/07/02

Fishing was good in the surf again today. Lots of trout were caught on live shrimp and topwaters, and reds were being caught on cut bait. At the jetties they were catching reds and sand trout. East and West Matagorda Bays produced nice catches of mostly trout along the south shoreline of both bays.

Tuesday 08/06/02

North shoreline of east bay was good for drifting under the birds. Fishermen came away with nice stringers of trout. No report from West Matagorda Bay, though. However, the surf was real good. You could catch some nice trout by driving down the beach and finding a spot or by going out the jetties by boat and turning east or west and fishing the surf. Baits to use in the surf were live shrimp under a popping cork or topwater lures like Top Dogs or She Dogs. Offshore was really good for catching kingfish and red snapper.

Monday 8/05/02

Down on the south shoreline at the east end of East Matagorda Bay there were trout being caught by drift fishermen who fished under the birds. The jetties were producing some reds and whiting using live and dead bait. The surf was the best fishing, though. It was good fishing for trout by driving down the beach and by going out the jetties and turning east or west. Nice trout were being brought in using live shrimp under a popping cork and topwater lures.

Sunday 08/04/02

The best fishing today was in the surf. There were lots of nice trout brought in for that location. You could catch 'em by driving down the beach to fish the surf or by going out the jetties in a boat and going east or west and fishing the surf. Offshore was real good today with catches of the usual - kingfish, red snapper, ling, etc. There were some redfish caught near the jetties. East and West Matagorda Bays only produced a few scattered catches of trout and reds.

Saturday 08/03/02

We had a pretty good day of fishing down here. In East and West Matagorda Bays there were trout and reds caught along the south shorelines by waders and driftfishermen who used artificials such as Bass Assassins or live shrimp under a popping cork. Offshore was real good, too - with lots of red snapper, ling, and kingfish brought in. Fishing at the jetties/pier was pretty slow - there were some sand trout and sharks caught. Some fishermen went out into the surf west of the jetties and brought in a few trout from there.

Friday 08/02/02

East and West Matagorda Bays only prodcued a few scattered trout here and there - no concentrations. Offshore fishing was good, though, with lots of kingfish and red snapper being brought in. At the pier on the beach, there were whitings, sand trout, and shark being caught on dead bait. At Sargent people were catching whitings and a few reds by the bridge and the same at the new cut.

Thursday 08/01/02

In West Matagorda Bay there were stringers of trout caught by wadefishermen along the south shoreline near Green's Bayou using fire tiger Bass Assassins. There were a few trout caught along the south shoreline in East Matagorda Bay as well, but West Bay was the better choice today. Flounder are being caught near the drawbridge in Matagorda by people fishing off the bank. People have been catching trout and sand trout in the river from around River Bend Tavern on down to the mouth of the river at night under lights There were red snapper, ling, dolphin and a few kingfish caught offshore today.

Kingfisher's Tip of the Week
More on structures -- this week we'll look at channels. Channels often provide sanctuary for fish, and you can often expect to catch such species as redfish, flounder, sheepshead, croaker, and other bottom-feeders. Try using bottom tackle such as two-hook bottom rigs or sliding sinker rigs, commonly called flounder and fluke rigs. Live and cut baits work well when fished on the bottom. For artificials, try jigging spoons, trolling spoons and jigs. And the best place to fish is on the downstream side of dropoffs and bars (flounder and speckled trout often hold at the shallow side of dropoffs, too). The current flows through the channel with the swifter water in the center and the lower velocity water along the edges so the edges hold the most fish because the slower current allows the fish to hold position with the least amount of energy.
