In the Bay

We're coming off a full moon now with weather which surprises us daily -- so where do we look for the best BITE??? Tide action isn't gonna be the greatest this week, but on a falling tide the game fish should be lying in wait along the inside edges of the mouth or cut leading out of the marsh - this area could be 100-400 yards depending on the wind direction. Your best BITE will be when you find that falling tide around midday or early afternoon. GO FOR IT!

Jewfish

The biggest Jewfish caught on the coast of Texas was in the Gulf of Mexico in 1937 - it weighed 551 lb. The IGFA record for the whole world weighed 680 lb. and was caught in 1961 in Fernandina Beach, Florida.

What are oyster borers?

An oyster borer, or drill, is an aquatic snail that preys on oysters, especially thin-shelled young oysters. Using a band of scraping teeth (a radula) and a shell-dissolving secretion, the gastropod drills a hole in the oyster shell and eats the creature within.

What is Oyster Spat?

The life cycle of the oyster begins with a free-swimming larval stage that eventually attaches to a hard substrate forming an oyster spat. The spat commences a growth period that is classified into sub-adult and adult phases.

Redfish Tails

Hi, Guys!

Wind has been the name of the game down here - a fishing tournament was cancelled this week because of it. Rough seas and high winds kept lots of fishermen at home.

Hopefully our weather will start straightening up for awhile. Looks like Friday will bring a change from northwest to northeast winds of about 10 mph for the weekend, with another switch around to the east about Monday. Winds from a northerly direction bring into play all the protected areas that you can find to fish.

When the surf calms down some, it should be good for bull reds using mullet, shrimp or crabs. Bull reds seem to like the surf a litte rough.

At the fishing pier and jetties at Matagorda Beach reds, croaker, and maybe some gafftop should make it onto your stringer if you use shrimp for bait.

In East Matagorda Bay, try fishing around the cuts for flounder and redfish - try tipping your jigs with shrimp. Trout should be fair on live shrimp and artificials in protected areas of the north shorelines. Watch for working birds and fish under them when you find them. Always remember - be courteous to other fishermen...

West Matagorda Bay - try Twin Island Reef and Shell Island using live shrimp - you might be able to have trout for supper. Oyster Lake is a good bet for reds and black drum using live bait like shrimp or mullet. You might give Crab Lake a try is the tide is right, and Mad Island Slough is worth looking at.

This high tide we're having allows you to get up into areas that normally can't be fished - that usually proves to be productive. Try drifting across some of those shallow reefs using topwaters or live shrimp under a popping cork - that should produce some reds for you.

What baits do we like this week? Once again I say -- live shrimp...but a topwater such as Top Dog Jr. or something similar in a black w/ chartreuse head should be the ticket, too - as well as anything in a bone color.

By the way, is it better having the newsletter come out on Wednesday than Thursday?

And in the meantime - come on down and wet a hook! Enjoy our bays!

Good Luck!

See ya next week,
Webmaster

P.S. I crave feedback, ideas for improvements, and fishing reports and pictures! Help me out.

This Week's Fishing Reports

Wednesday 09/25/02

High tides and winds gusting to 30 mph hampered fishing today - there were a few people out in boats but no reports of fish being caught. There were some nice reds caught again today at the bridge.

Tuesday 09/24/02

The Guides' Cup fishing tournament was supposed to be held today but it was cancelled because of the winds. No fishing report was available for today. However I saw some really nice reds being caught down at the pontoon bridge this evening in Matagorda. The surf is really rough and the tide is up again - over the road in spots on the way to the beach.

Monday 09/23/02

Very little fishing news for today. Only a few brave souls ventured out this morning. There were some small trout and reds caught in Oyster Lake using Norton Sand Eels in a tequila gold color and Top Dogs in black/chartreuse - also some nice keeper trout and reds along with a few flounder.

Sunday 09/22/02

In East Matagorda Bay the birds weren't working today. Pickings were pretty slim. However, wadefishermen and drift fishermen along the north shoreline were able to catch some trout using artificials. There were a few whiting and sand trout caught in the river, too.

Saturday 09/21/02

Fishing was good offshore today. There were lots of red snapper and amberjack brought in. There were also big drum, sand trout, and whiting being caught in the river and at the jetties area. East Matagorda Bay was good for fishing under the birds for trout and for drifting areas over scattered shell.

Friday 09/20/02

In East Matagorda Bay the fishing was pretty good for fishermen who were drifting under the birds along the north shoreline - they were able to bring home fair numbers of small trout (15 to 18 inches) using artificials such as Norton Sand Eel Jr. in a Tequila Gold color. Also, there were reports of flounder being caught at Old Gulf Cut using live shrimp. A little windy today, but not too rough to be in the bay.

Thursday 09/19/02

Today wasn't as good as it was yesterday. Out in East Matagorda there were some trout caught wadefishing along the south shoreline and drifting over scattered shell using a combination Bass Assassins and live bait. In West Matagorda Bay there were some trout caught around the Green's Bayou area using soft plastics - Bass Assassins.

Wednesday 09/18/02

East Matagorda Bay was fair to good for catching trout under the birds using topwaters like She-Dogs. Some wadefishermen were able to catch a few, but the wind picked upsome today and put a damper on the fishing. There were also a few trout and reds caught in the Green's Bayou area using artificials like Norton Sand Eels, etc.

Kingfisher's Tip of the Week

Fishing shell reefs can be very productive this time of year. With these higher tides we are having, you should fish topwaters or soft plastics right on top of the reef. However, when tides are normal, try fishing the ends of the reefs with something like a corky.

When you have a fishing buddy with you, try different lures to see what's working that day - you try a topwater and have your buddy throw a soft plastic lure - until you find what the fish like for that day.
