There were some trout caught over in West Matagorda Bay
on the south shoreline on the east end of the bay by wadefishermen
using soft plastics. In East Matagorda Bay there were some trout
and reds caught on soft plastics down on the south shoreline by
wadefishermen and by drifting over shell reefs using artificials.
The bad weather kept most fishermen at home, though.
Tuesday 10/08/02
East Matagorda Bay produced a few trout and reds by drifting
over scattered shell on the south side of the bay using soft plastics
- Bass Assassins/Norton Sand Eels in fire tiger, plum/chartreuse,
and red shad colors. There were also trout and reds caught at Oyster
Lake on live shrimp under a popping cork and red shad Bass Assassins.

A slow day of fishing around Matagorda Bay....all our reports
came from East Matagorda Bay. Wadefishing along the south shoreline
produced a few trout and reds using artificials like Bass Assassins.
There were some spotty catches of reds, gafftop, and whiting in
the Colorado River around the pontoon bridge and on toward the beach.
We heard that over the weekend someone hooked a little tarpon at
the jetties but didn't land it.
Thanks to Martin Pena for the fishing report - his fishing
party caught three reds at the mouth of the Colorado River on Saturday
morning - 39", 41" and a 42". Wow! Great catch! Next
time send pictures!!! The law about keeping over-sized redfish is
as follows: During a license year, one red drum over the stated
maximum length limit may be retained when affixed with a properly
executed Red Drum Tag and one red drum over the stated maximum length
limit may be retained when affixed with a properly executed Bonus
Red Drum Tag. Any fish retained under authority of a Red Drum Tag
or a Bonus Red Drum Tag shall be counted in addition to the daily
bag and possession limit.
Sunday 10/06/02
Fishing was slower today than yesterday. East Matagorda
Bay had some catches of trout and reds by drifting over scattered
shell and wadefishing along the south shoreline. There were also
limits of flounder gigged last night along the south shoreline of
the bay. There were also some reds caught over in West Matagorda
Bay down in the Green's Bayou area.
Saturday 10/05/02
Good day of fishing in most places! There were some reds
and flounder caught along the Intracoastal Waterway. At the jetties
at the beach there were some nice bull reds brought in using cut
bait (mullet). Over in West Matagorda Bay there were trout and redfish
caught by wadefishermen along the north shoreline around Shell Island
early in the day. Drifting in Oyster Lake produced some nice reds
on artificials. There were also some limits of trout caught on the
south shoreline of West Bay by wadefishermen. In East Matagorda
Bay there was a fair amount of trout caught by drift fishermen and
wade fishermen using the usual combination of artificials and live
shrimp. The boats that went offshore came back in with some nice
catches of red snapper.
We also had a report of some trout being caught up the
river under lights at night.
Friday 10/04/02
Most of the fishing done today was done over in East Matagorda
Bay, but even so, it was pretty slow. There were scattered reports
of trout being caught by drifting over scattered shell and wadefishing
along the south shoreline. Most fish were caught on the west end
of the bay on a combination of topwaters, soft plastics and live
shrimp under a popping cork. At the jetties there were some nice-sized
reds caught on dead shrimp and cut bait.
Thursday 10/03/02
There didn't seem to be a lot of fishermen out today, but
those who went to East Matagorda Bay did fairly well. Drifting over
the deeper reefs down on the west end, drifting under the birds
along the north shoreline, and wadefishing along the north shoreline
all proved to be good spots to be in. Baits of choice were Norton
Sand Eels in tequila gold color, Skitterwalkers in black w/ orange
belly, and other soft plastics and topwaters.
Wednesday 10/02/02
East Matagorda Bay produced limits of trout and redfish
and some flounder. The hot spots were wading along the south shoreline
and drifting over scattered shell reefs on the west end of the bay.
Baits used were Norton Sand Eels, topwaters in a chartreuse or bone
color, and some live shrimp under a popping cork. Surf is too rough
to be producing much.
