In the Bay

Tide action will be good this weekend so there should be plenty of bait moving around - should provide opportunities to work the birds. We'll be coming up on a new moon, so the fish won't be feeding much at night - they'll be hungry during the day - and that's when you'll find the best BITE. Afternoons as the tide is going out should be the best!

Gulf Coast Fisherman

Gulf Coast Fisherman magazine - published exclusively for saltwater fishermen from Texas to Florida since 1976; has lots of valuable information for the coastal fisherman!

Southern Flounder

The biggest Southern Flounder caught on the coast of Texas was in Sabine Lake in 1976 - it weighed 13 lb. and was 28 inches long. The IGFA record for the whole world weighed 20 lb. 9 oz. and was caught in 1983 around Nassau Sound, Florida.

Are sea turtles endangered?

All six species of sea turtles in the U.S. are protected under the Endangered Species Act of 1973. These are the green, hawksbill, Kemp's ridley, leatherback, loggerhead and olive ridley sea turtles. The hawksbill, Kemp's ridley, and leatherback sea turtles are listed as endangered under the ESA. The loggerhead, green and olive ridley sea turtles are listed as threatened, except for breeding populations of green sea turtles in Florida and on the Pacific coast of Mexico, and breeding populations of olive ridley sea turtles on the Pacific coast of Mexico, which are listed as endangered.

What is a Turtle Excluder Device (TED)?

The Turtle Excluder Device or TED is a grid of bars with an opening either at the top or the bottom. The grid is fitted into the neck of a shrimp trawl. Small animals like shrimp slip through the bars and are caught in the bag end of the trawl. Large animals such as turtles and sharks, when caught at the mouth of the trawl, strike the grid bars and are ejected through the opening.

Redfish Tails

Hi, Guys!

Sorry the newsletter didn't make it to you the last two weeks. I thought I had things "worked out" but my knee surgery slowed me down more than I thought it would. But we're back up and running now -- and glad to be back! I hope ya'll missed me - 8-)

Looks like we're gonna have some norther influence this week - the wind should be out of the northeast until this weekend, then switch around to the east and keep switching until it ends up southeasterly by the end of the weekend. The bays may be a little choppy with the wind blowing, so look for protected areas that have proven themselves in the past.

Fishing at the jetties and surf may be productive for black drum, sand trout, flounder, bull reds, and whiting if you'll try using fresh dead shrimp for bait. Live bait should also produce for you.

East Matagorda Bay hot spots this week will include the north/west shoreline areas, Bird Island area, and the scattered shell areas in midbay for trout and redfish. The cuts leading into the bay should start producing some nice flounder using live bait or something like the Flounder Pounder in a white/pink combination.

Look for the outgoing tide over in West Matagorda Bay and fish for trout and reds in the mouths of the bayous along the south shoreline. Oyster Lake should produce trout and some reds when drift fishing, using soft plastics for bait. Spots along the north shoreline should prove to be good, as well as scattered shell ares on the north side of this bay.

What baits do we like this week? Red shad is the best color this week, and live shrimp under a popping cork always proves its worth for me.

And in the meantime - come on down and wet a hook! Enjoy our bays!

Good Luck!

See ya next week,
Webmaster

P.S. I crave feedback, ideas for improvements, and fishing reports and pictures! Help me out.

This Week's Fishing Reports

Wednesday 10/30/02

East Matagorda Bay was good for those fishermen who worked the birds, drifted over scattered shell, or waded the north shoreline -- it produced some nice trout in th 24" to 26" range and some flounder using artificials and live shrimp under a popping cork. There was a long wait at the Colorado River Locks today. There were also some trout caught in Oyster Lake by drift fishermen using red shad Bass Assassins.

Tuesday 10/29/02

The action was in East Matagorda Bay today. Using soft plastics like Bass Assassins in a red shad color or morning glory/chartreuse combination and working the birds and drifting over scattered shell along the north shoreline and midbay area produced some nice stringers of trout. There were a lot of sand trout being caught, too.

Monday 10/28/02

The brave souls who ventured out in today's weather drifted over scattered shell, worked the birds, and wadefished along the south shorelines brought home stringers of trout with a few reds included. Bad weather chased everyone in early, though.

Sunday 10/27/02

East Matagorda Bay again! Mostly working the birds and drifting over scattered shell produced stringers of trout and some redfish using live and artificial baits. We had a couple of reports of limits of red snapper and some ling being caught offshore.

Saturday 10/26/02

A rainy day down here in Matagorda, but fishermen were active and we had lots of reports of fish being caught. The best place to be was fishing under the birds over in East Matagorda Bay - lots of stringers of nice trout were brought in from there - baits used were soft plastics and live shrimp under a popping cork.

Friday 10/25/02

Another great day of fishing in East Matagorda Bay! Stringers of nice-sized trout were caught by working the birds, drifting over scattered shell reefs in midbay, and wadefishing along the south shoreline. Baits of choice were artificials and live shrimp under a popping cork.

Thursday 10/24/02

In East Matagorda Bay there were trout and redfish being caught by wadefishermen around the Bird Island area using artificials. In West Matagorda Bay trout and reds were caught on the south shoreline in the Green's Bayou area on soft plastics. Oyster Lake again produced some redifsh when drifting using live shrimp under a popping cork. There were some nice trout caught near Palacios in West Matagorda Bay by wadefishing using morning glory/chartreuse Bass Assassins.

Wednesday 10/23/02

Fishing today was wet....It rained hard today, the wind blew hard, and no one went out fishing.

Tuesday 10/22/02

East Matagorda Bay - drifting over scattered shell and working the birds produced some nice stringers of trout and some redfish using soft plastics or topwaters. Bad weather chased a bunch of fishermen in early today.

Monday 10/21/02

East Matagorda Bay produced a fair amount of trout, reds and flounder today. Most were caught on the south shoreline toward the east end of the bay by wadefishermen and those who worked the birds. Morning glory Bass Assassins proved to be a good choice, as well as gold Mirrolures.

There were reports of trout and some redfish being caught along the south shoreline down around Green's Bayou using artificial baits.

Kingfisher's Tip of the Week

When fishing the reefs, watch for tidal movement. Fish the end of the reefs when the current is at its strongest because bait will be swept along by the tide and washed around the ends of the reefs – trout and redfish will lie nearby hoping for an ambush and an easy meal.

Beginner Tip

When fishing with soft plastics and other artificials, choose your color based on water clarity:

Clear water red/white, pumpkinseed/chartreuse, rootbeer/chartreuse, red flash and salt/pepper
Off color water limetreuse, red shad, purple/white, purple/chartreuse, night-glow/chartreuse, fire tiger
