In the Bay

Tide action will be slow this weekend so you'll have to work hard to find the bait moving - watch for birds to be working in the bays. We're coming up on a full moon - so the best BITE will be in the mornings and moving toward midday.

The biggest Striped Bass caught on the coast of Texas was in Galveston Bay in 1991 - it weighed 28 lb. and was 33.5 inches long. The IGFA record for the whole world weighed 78 lb. 8 oz. and was caught in 1982 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Are sharks always hungry?

It has been observed that sharks can go up to approximately 6 weeks without feeding, and the record for a shark fasting was observed with the Swell Shark, in which it did not eat for 15 months. Sharks can enter what is called an "eating phase" in which, yes, perhaps the shark might constitute hunger, but on the grand scale of things, no a shark does not get hungry.

Hi, Guys!

It's been a hectic week around here - my first week back at work, so I'm running a day behind with the newsletter. I'm slowly getting back up to speed, though, so bear with me 8-)

It looks like our week of fishing is going to start off with east winds which turn to south for the weekend and blow hard enough to make the bays a little choppy. On Monday the winds will get stronger in preparation for a norther which will blow in on Tuesday. Remember -- fishing is good before a cold front because of the change in barometric pressure...

Surf may be a little choppy for the weekend and flatten out when the norther hits early next week. You may be able to bring home a mixed stringer from the jetty and pier. Using dead shrimp and/or live shrimp for bait, you should be able to catch sand trout, black drum, flounder, and some croaker and whiting.

East Matagorda Bay hot spots this weekend will include spots along the south shoreline, under the birds (although you may be pulling in more small trout than anything), and the scattered shell areas in midbay for trout and redfish. The Bird Island area down on the east end looks real good, too. Remember it's flounder season - look for them in the cuts which lead from the bays.

The south shoreline of West Matagorda Bay down around the Cullen houses should give you a full stringer of trout using live shrimp under a popping cork and soft plastics like Norton Sand Eels and Bass Assassins. If you can find birds working, try it out -- you should get a couple of keeper trout.

What baits do we like this week? Red shad is still a good color to be throwing, as well as purple with a chartreuse tail. I probably don't even need to repeat this again...but...live shrimp under a popping cork always is a good choice.

And in the meantime - come on down and wet a hook! Enjoy our bays!

Good Luck!

See ya next week,
Webmaster

P.S. I crave feedback, ideas for improvements, and fishing reports and pictures! Help me out.

This Week's Fishing Reports

Thursday 11/07/02

A real good day for fishing down here in Matagorda! Over in East Matagorda Bay everyone came home with a nice stringer of trout. Drifting over scattered shell and working the birds on the west end of the bay using soft plastics or live shrimp under a popping cork was very productive.

Wednesday 11/06/02

Fair day of fishing in East Matagorda Bay today - wadefishing, drifting over scattered shell, and working the birds - north shoreline and west end of the bay. There were some nice stringers of trout caught there using artificials such as Bass Assassins and other soft plastics. The locks were closed today and should be closed tomorrow, so you will probably be unable to get to West Matagorda Bay from Matagorda.

Tuesday 11/05/02

We had a few reports of trout being caught in East Matagorda Bay by working the birds using soft plastics for bait. However, few people went out fishing today. Tomorrow looks to be a better day of fishing.

Monday 11/04/02

Wet, windy, and waterlogged! - No fishing report.

Sunday 11/03/02

East Matagorda Bay - a few fishermen went out today and reported catching trout by drifting under the birds and over scattered shell in midbay - using artificials such as Bass Assassins and Norton Sand Eels. There were also some nice bull redfish caught in the surf about 10 miles down from the pier - using live mullet and cut bait.

Saturday 11/02/02

Bad weather kept all but the die-hard fishermen at the dock today. Rain fell most of the day. However, those who did make it out into East Matagorda Bay were able to catch a few trout down near Bird Island by wading and drifting that area.

Friday 11/01/02

Windy, windy, and more windy! Fishing was poor today because of the high winds in the bays. The fishermen who went out, though, caught a few trout and some reds and flounder down on the east end of East Matagorda Bay drifting over scattered shell and wadefishing around Bird Island.

Thursday 10/31/02

Not many fishermen were out in the bays today. The winds were pretty high out of the northeast, and that kept a lot of fishermen home. Those who did make it out were able to bring home a few fish, though. In East Matagorda Bay there were trout caught in the Bird Island area by fishermen who drifted over scattered shell or worked the birds. Best baits were Bass Assassins. There were a few wadefishermen out there, too. Over in West Matagorda Bay the south shoreline produced some nice redfish on topwaters and live shrimp.

Wednesday 10/30/02

East Matagorda Bay was good for those fishermen who worked the birds, drifted over scattered shell, or waded the north shoreline -- it produced some nice trout in th 24" to 26" range and some flounder using artificials and live shrimp under a popping cork. There was a long wait at the Colorado River Locks today. There were also some trout caught in Oyster Lake by drift fishermen using red shad Bass Assassins.

Kingfisher's Tip of the Week

When fishing for trout, don't set the hook too quickly or you will pull it out of the trout's mouth. A trout takes a shrimp from the back folding its sharp head and tail horns together. It sometimes takes him awhile to get the shrimp to cooperate.

Beginner Tip

A Mirrolure is a good lure for speckled trout and reds. Cast the lure, let it settle for a couple of seconds, and retrieve slowly. It works best with light tackle.
