In the Bay

Bait should be moving really good this week - lots of tide action going on! That'll make fishing under the birds have a good BITE. We're heading toward a full moon so your best BITE should be in the morning and working on to midday and afternoon.

FishHoo! is a Yahoo like search engine and directory that catalogs all fishing related web sites. This site is the Internet's most complete resource for fishing information. We index fishing sites from bait shops to fishing schools.

Bonnethead Shark
The biggest Bonnethead Shark caught on the coast of Texas was in Galveston Bay in 1991 - it weighed 22.81 lb. and was 48 inches long. The IGFA record for the whole world weighed 23 lb. 11 oz. and was caught in 1992 in Cumberland Sound, Georgia.

What sea creatures other than sharks may be dangerous to swimmers?

The barracuda (though divers claim its ferocious reputation is undeserved), moray eels, octopuses, and sharp-spined sea urchins can be dangerous to swimmers.
Portugese Man-of-War

The Portugese man-of-war has tentacles up to 50 feet long with specialized cells that produce painful stings and welts on contact by swimmers. Sting rays, toadfish, catfish, and jellyfish can inflict damage on swimmers and waders. Certain coral-reef organisms are to be avoided by divers.

Redfish Tails

Hi, Guys!

Cool weather has made it to Matagorda, and as the water in the bays get colder the trout will become sluggish - you'll have to slow your retrieve down. There are lots of sand trout in the bays now, and people are catching lots of them. If you're looking for trout this week, try this - find a cove which has a deep gut going into it - the trout should be hanging right in the gut.

Before the weekend, the wind should be out of the south with a chance of rain to ruin your day. For the weekend, though, the wind should be out of the north and blowing pretty strong, making the bays choppy. After the weekend, though, the wind should slow down and turn around and come from the south again. Protected shorelines should be good when the north wind howls.

At the jetty you should be able to pick up some sand trout, flounder, redfish and croakers are on fresh dead shrimp. Nice reds will be caught on mullet.

This is the time of year when fishing in cuts for flounder is always good - this will hold true in both bays. Drifting over scattered shell should be good for trout. Redfish will be in the grassy areas - catch them with spoons and She-Dogs. Drull's Lump will prove to be a good area to wade for trout. Fish tight to the grasslines where possible.

West Matagorda Bay should be good on the south shoreline using live shrimp, spoons, or topwaters. Give Crab Lake and Oyster Lake a try for reds using live shrimp under a popping cork or your favorite topwater. The Greens Bayou area will prove to be a hot spot this week. Throw a soft plastic in red shad or plum/chartreuse in this area.

What baits do we like this week? Any soft plastic with a chartreuse tail - plum/chartruese, pear/chartreuse, pumpkinseed/chartreuse. Bone, red shad, and glow soft plastics should also be good when fished tight to the grassline. You can also throw gold spoons and topwaters. And, of course, live shrimp under a popping cork!

And in the meantime - come on down and wet a hook! Enjoy our bays!

Good Luck!

See ya next week,
Webmaster

P.S. I crave feedback, ideas for improvements, and fishing reports and pictures! Help me out.

This Week's Fishing Reports

Wednesday 11/13/02

Nice stringers of trout were caught in East Matagorda Bay today by wadefishermen along the north shoreline using Bass Assassins, and working the birds also produced some nice trout. Over in West Matagorda Bay there were nice trout caught by wadefishermen down around the Green's Bayou area on the south shoreline using soft plastics such as Norton Sand Eels.

Tuesday 11/12/02

Pretty slow today...there were some catches of trout by wadefishermen along the north shoreline on the west end of East Matagorda Bay using Bass Assassins, and there were some trout caught by drifting under the birds. Other than that, not much to report.

Monday 11/11/02

Another slow day of fishing down here. There were a few trout caught along the north shoreline of East Matagorda Bay down on the west end of the bay, and we had reports of some trout and reds being caught over in West Bay.

There is a FISHING TOURNAMENT on Wednesday, November 13 being put on by Wharton County Sheriff Association. It is open to anyone. Regristration can occur up until 6:00 a.m. on the day of the tournament. Thanks to John Gully for letting us know about it. Anytime you have fishing news or tournament news you would like included in the daily fishing report or in the weekly newsletter, just send it to me - I'll be glad to put it in!

Sunday 11/10/02

Fishing slowed down today because of the wind. There were a few trout caught over in East Matagorda Bay on the south and west sides. The surf was too rough so no report from there.

Saturday 11/09/02

Bull reds were caught at the jetty and in the surf using cut bait. In East Matagorda Bay stringers of trout were caught by working the birds and drifting over scattered shell using live shrimp and artificials. The west end of the bay proved to be a good spot to fish.

Friday 11/08/02

Well, I think the Colorado River locks are still closed to pleasure boat traffic. At the jetty on Matagorda Beach, there were bull reds being caught on cut bait, trout being caught on live shrimp, and whiting being caught on dead/live shrimp. Fishing was about the same in East Matagorda Bay today as it was yesterday -- just not quite so good. There were still trout to be caught by drifting over scattered shell in midbay and working the birds on the west end.

Thursday 11/07/02

A real good day for fishing down here in Matagorda! Over in East Matagorda Bay everyone came home with a nice stringer of trout. Drifting over scattered shell and working the birds on the west end of the bay using soft plastics or live shrimp under a popping cork was very productive.

Wednesday 11/06/02

Fair day of fishing in East Matagorda Bay today - wadefishing, drifting over scattered shell, and working the birds - north shoreline and west end of the bay. There were some nice stringers of trout caught there using artificials such as Bass Assassins and other soft plastics. The locks were closed today and should be closed tomorrow, so you will probably be unable to get to West Matagorda Bay from Matagorda.

Kingfisher's Tip of the Week
Fishing with Lures:
  • "Match the Hatch" - use lures that imitate baitfish or food in the area - size and color are important
  • Lures can be used with wire or monofilament leaders, but a heavy leader on a light lure will hinder the action.
Beginner Tip:

How do I prepare a mullet for cut bait? It can be prepared several ways:

  • Cut into chunks 1"-1 1/2" to 2" square
  • Filleted and used in strips 4-6 inches in length
  • Cut in half
  • Can be used whole if the mullet is small
Note: When a large chunk of mullet is used, stab the skin full of holes with a fish knife so that the oily substance within can escape and appeal to the fish's smell.
