Note from the Webmaster
In the Bay

We have a new moon this week, so your best BITE should be fishing the tides early and late. On the whole, though, fishing should be great this weekend even with the slow tidal action, so expect to find that best BITE at any time of day. Think like a fish!

Underwater Times

The daily journal of life in and around the water! The web's finest source of news in and around water. News sections include oceans, sharks, crocs/gators, whales, underwater animals, scuba diving, polar and fish.

Boy, I was really impressed with this site! If you like newspapers, here's one that has all kinds of interesting news stories related to water! Check it out!

Jewfish
The biggest Lookdown caught on the coast of Texas was in the Gulf of Mexico in 1987 - it weighed 3.69 lb. and was 20.75 inches long. The IGFA record for the whole world weighed 4 lb. 10 oz. and was caught in 1993 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It can be found around jetties, piers, and bridges and cruising the edge of beach just outside the surf.

Fishing Definition of the Day

Angler - An obsessed individual who owns a house that is falling down due to neglect, a truck whose color can best be described as Rust-Oleum, and a pristine boat that he chamois' down methodically before and after each trip.
How big do shrimp grow?
Depending on the species, size ranges from about 1/2 inch long on the west coast of the United States, to almost 12 inches elsewhere.

How long do shrimp live?
The life cycle varies geographically and by species. Some live as long as 6 1/2 years, others live only a year.

Redfish Tails

Hi, Guys!

Don't be surprised if you don't receive your newsletter next week - I will be back in the hospital getting another artificial knee! There will be no fishing reports posted on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, but fishing reports should resume on Friday, Dec. 13th.

It turned off rainy and cold today - not much fishing going on. Thursday doesn't look too good, but Friday and Saturday may prove to be the best fishing days we have this week. Sunday, though, the wind will probably start picking up with the next cold front that blows through. The water temperature at Old Gulf is around 62 degrees and the water level is 8.7 feet.

There is going to be some work going on at the Colorado River Locks December 9-20 with divers in the water. There may long waits or closures - I'm not sure.

This Saturday night, December 7, is the 2nd Annual YuleTIDE Christmas SAILabration - with a lighted boat parade at Matagorda Harbor starting at 5:30 p.m. Come on down and watch it!

In East Matagorda Bay the deeper areas of scattered shell in mid bay are proving to be good producers now. You should be able to catch trout on soft plastics and reds on spoons or shrimp. When the northerly winds blow, look for protected shorelines north shoreline on the west end. We've had some good "bird" days - either they're all over the place or you can't find a single one! So, if the birds are working, you should be able to catch some keepers by drifting under them.

At the jetty pier redfish, flounder, whiting, black drum and croaker should be biting on shrimp.

West Matagorda Bay is producing some nice catches of trout along the south shoreline in protected areas and in holes and guts using gold spoons and soft plastics.

What baits do we like this week? Pearl and limetreuse Norton SandEel Juniors, glow Corkys, gold spoons, red shad, plum, and chartreuse soft plastics. 8-)

And in the meantime - come on down and wet a hook! Enjoy our bays ... and be safe and courteous on the water!

Good Luck!

See ya next week,
Webmaster

P.S. I crave feedback, ideas for improvements, and fishing reports and pictures! Help me out.

This Week's Fishing Reports

Wednesday 12/04/02

Rainy....cold.....windy!

Tuesday 12/03/02

East Matagorda Bay again! There were a few trout caught by wadefishermen this morning along the south shoreline. The rain forced everyone back to the harbor about noon, but the sun was out again by early afternoon, and the birds were working everywhere in the bay. Drifting under the birds produced lots of trout this afternoon. Over in West Matagorda Bay there were trout and reds caught along the south shoreline, but not as many as were caught in East Matagorda Bay.

Monday 12/02/02

East Matagorda Bay had limits of trout caught by wadefishermen using artificials along the north shoreline on the east end of the bay. Over in West Matagorda Bay a few trout and reds were caught along the south shoreline near the Green's Bayou area using artificials. I had a report of some trout being caught at night up the Colorado River. The water is starting to clear up near Selkirk, but there is no bait working yet.

From December 9 to December 20, there will be divers working at the Colorado River Locks. I'm not sure how this will affect going over to West Matagorda Bay, but I will find out and post on this page.

Sunday 12/01/02

East Matagorda Bay produced some trout and reds for wadefishermen and drift fishermen down on the east end of the bay. West Matagorda Bay was good for some nice reds along the south shoreline using artificials. There weren't as many fishermen out today, presumably because they all headed home today. There are still reds and bull reds being caught down the beach in the surf using cut mullet for bait.

Saturday 11/30/02

East Matagorda Bay was real productive again today. There were limits of trout caught by working the birds this morning -- this afternoon the birds played out but drifting over scattered shell in midbay was just as productive. Bull reds are being caught in the surf and trout are being caught in the river around River Bend Restaurant. Over in West Matagorda Bay there were some really good catches of redfish down in the Green's Bayou area along the south shoreline. Another good day of fishing!

Friday 11/29/02

Lots of trout and redfish were brought in from East Matagorda Bay today - most were caught by drifting under the birds using artificials and live bait. Lots of fishermen were able to limit out on fish. There were lots of black drum caught in the river and at the jetty. I had one report of some nice reds coming out of West Matagorda Bay, but I didn't find out the location fished.

Thursday 11/28/02

Happy Thanksgiving - no fishing report today because of turkey dinners.

Wednesday 11/27/02

No fishing report today because of the weather.

Kingfisher's Tip of the Week

Here are some tips for working the birds:

  • Need a decent pair of binoculars
  • Get to a position 100 yd. upwind of where they're working
  • Use your trolling motor to fine-tune your drift and maintain your position for casting
  • Keep a rod rigged with a soft plastic bait and have it ready
  • Work the edges
  • Rig with a heavier jighead to reach lower in the water column
  • Never interfere with another boat's fishing
